It’s below that the ranking gets more animated. The Hyundai i20 is up 2 spots on September to a shiny 6th place, the Maruti Ertiga gains one further rank to #9 with 7,289 sales and 3.1% which are ranking and volume records for the model. The Renault Duster continues its seemingly unstoppable progression, up 5 spots on last month to a best-ever 15th place at a record 5,406 units and 2.3% share. That’s 80% of Renault sales in India in October…

Chevrolet Sail

The Mahindra XUV500 catches its breath this month, down 2 ranks to a still very respectable #19 while the Tata Nano is down to #21 and 4,004 sales, its lowest ranking since September 2011. The Mahindra Quanto is up 5 spots to #28 at 2,497 units for its 2nd month of sales in the country, the Renault Scala is up one to #43 and we welcome the Mahindra Thar in the ranking #45 with 686 sales, even though it is not a new model. After a month of August disrupted by labour unrest, the Indian new car market is back up 4% year-on-year in September to 214,796 registrations, the highest result since last April and bringing the year-to-date total to 1,993,067 units, up 9% on 2011. The models ranking is back to a little bit more normality in September: the Maruti Alto sells 21,209 units for a 9.9% share, still not record levels but way better than the 10,488 sales and 6.1% it lodged last month… In 2nd place, the Maruti Wagon R hits its highest market share in nearly 2 years at 7.7% thanks to 16,456 units, its 2nd best monthly figure after the 16,952 it sold in October 2010

Maruti Wagon R

The Maruti DZire is back up to #3 with 11,694 sales and 5.4% ahead of the Mahindra Bolero at 9,499 units and 4.4% and the Maruti Swift with 9,136 sales and 4.3%. Solid month for the Hyundai i10 (#6), Tata Indica/Vista (#7) and Hyundai i20 (#8) while at #9, the Maruti Ritz (aka Suzuki Splash) simply delivers its highest volume ever at 7,598 sales and its highest share in 2 years at 3.5%. Renault Scala

Finally, we welcome the Mahindra Quanto in the ranking: it makes its first appearance at #33 with 1,782 sales and 0.8% share. Notice also the Renault Scala (a rebadged Nissan Sunny) up 16 spots on August for its 2nd month of sales to break into the Top 50 at #44 with 688 units and 0.3% and the Hyundai Elantra already dominating its category at #43 with 781 sales.

* See the Top 200 best-selling models by clicking on the title! *

For the first time since last January, the Spanish new car market is up year-on-year, albeit by a shy 3.5% to 48,966 registrations, in anticipation of the VAT increase from 18% to 21% due in September. The year-to-date total now stands at 521,075 units, down 9% on 2011. At 1,584 sales and 3.2% share, the Nissan Qashqai manages to stay in pole position for the 2nd consecutive month, the first time it does so in Spain. It is the 4th time overall that the Qashqai dominates the Spanish models ranking after December 2010January 2012 and July 2012. It is still #2 year-to-date however at 16,423 units and 3.2% behind the Seat Ibiza, down to #5 this month, at 19,008 sales and 3.6%.

Opel Astra

Exceptional performance of the Opel Astra up from #15 in June and #7 in July to second place in August with 1,468 units and 3%, potentially the nameplate’s best score in the country in a decade. The Astra is #10 year-to-date like in 2011. The Seat Leon also has an outstanding month, up 3 spots to round up the podium with 1,438 sales and 2.9%, ahead of the VW Golf stable at #4 with 1,381 units and 2.8%. Other great performers in the Top 10 include the Ford Focus up 5 ranks to #7 and the Toyota Auris up 12 to #9.

Tata Aria

Serious labour unrest at the Manesar Maruti plant means the Indian new car market is turned completely upside down this month. At 171,668 registrations, new car sales are down 5% year-on-year and at their lowest in over 20 months. The 2012 year-to-date total stands at 1,778,271 units after 8 months, still up a respectable 10% on 2011. The way Maruti has handled the problems at its Manesar plant is by de-prioritising production of best-sellers Alto, Swift and Dzire to the benefit of the (potentially more profitable?) Wagon R, Ertiga, Eeco, Omni and Ritz, therefore impacting the market as a whole as competitors in the small car segment get a boost.

As a result, the Alto, although still #1, is down to just 10,488 sales and 6.1% share, potentially its lowest monthly volume in 7 years, only 410 units above the Maruti Wagon R at 10,078 sales and back up to #2 for the first time since August 2011. The Maruti DZire is down to #24 and the Swift down to #41…

Mahindra Bolero

Below, the upheaval continues: the Mahindra Bolero climbs onto the Indian podium for the very first time at #3 with 8,717 units and a record 5.1%, while the Hyundai i20 is up 3 spots on July to #4, also its highest ranking ever in the country, with 7,712 sales and a record 4.5% share.

Maruti Ertiga

The Maruti Ertiga is also up to a best-ever 6th place with 6,643 units and a record 3.9%, the Tata Nano is up 6 ranks to #7, the Toyota Innova is up 2 to #8 and 3.8%, beating its market share record for the 5th consecutive month, the Ford Figo is up 6 to #10, its highest ranking in India since March 2011, the Maruti Eeco is up 28 to #12 and the Mahindra XUV500 is up one spot to reach a best-ever 18th place with 3,979 sales and a record 2.3%.

Renault Duster

Renault has a fantastic month, passing both Nissan and Skoda to 4,036 sales vs. 482 last May. The Renault Duster is up a brilliant 15 spots to sit in 21st place for its second month of sales in the country at 3,184 units and 1.9%. The Renault Pulse is up to a best-ever #43 while the Scala makes its very first appearance with 120 sales.

Mahindra Verito

Other great performers this month include the Mahindra Verito (aka Dacia Logan) hitting its highest monthly volume ever and first time above 2,000 units at 2,102 thanks to its facelift, and the Hyundai Elantra gearing up to #42 with 608 units for its first full month of sales in India.

Ghana: Mitsubishi Pajero very popular

* Click on title for Ghanaian street videos! *

Ghana is one of the most dynamic car market in Africa, with 12,000 new car sales in 2011, double that of neighbour Cote d’Ivoire. It is also relatively mature, with a full variety of models available and a very fragmented structure.

Among the most popular new cars are the Mitsubishi Pajero, Toyota Hilux, Nissan Hardbody, Mitsubishi L200, Tata Indigo, Toyota Corolla and Fortuner. Surprisingly the Pontiac Vibe also seem to be successful, as well as the Ford Ranger, Tata Indica, Honda CRV, Toyota Yaris Sedan and Mahindra Pick-up.

The Dacia Logan also appears in the streets of Accra. The Iranian Saipa 111 (aka Kia Pride) is ubiquitous as a taxi, and the same goes for 1991 Opel Astras and Mercedes TN vans which all seem to travel to Ghana to finish their busy lives.

The Indian new car market is up 11% year-on-year to 192,576 registrations, bringing the year-to-date total to 1,606,603 units, up 12% on 2011. Very stable models ranking this month with the Top 5 unchanged vs. last month: the Maruti Alto leads with 17,422 sales but a weak 9% share (vs. 10.9% year-to-date), ahead of the Maruti Swift at 11,421 units, the Maruti DZire at 11,413 sales, both at a shy 5.9% share, the Maruti Wagon R at 5% and the Mahindra Bolero equalling the record share it hit last month at 4.8% thanks to 9,312 sales.

Maruti Ertiga

At 8,852 sales, the Tata Indica/Vista is back up 9 spots to #6, equalling its 2012 ranking but its first time at that level since last March. It is followed by the Hyundai i20, beating its volume record once again at 7,775 units. At a brilliant 8th place, the Maruti Ertiga breaks into the Indian Top 10 for the very first time, up 6 ranks on last month with a best-ever 7,091 sales and 3.7% share. Below the Tata Indigo/Manza back in great shape at #9 (+15 spots!), the Toyota Innova manages to beat its record Indian market share for the 4th consecutive month at 3.5% thanks to 6,678 sales at #10…

Mahindra XUV500

Further down, the Hyundai Eon falls to a surprisingly low #15 with 4,985 sales, the Mahindra XUV500 breaks into the monthly Top 20 for the first time at a best-ever #19 with 4,007 sales and 2.1%, also volume and share records for the model and the Tata Sumo also delivers ranking, volume and share records this month at #20 with 3,898 units and 2%, potentially thanks to the launch of the Sumo Gold version.

Tata Sumo Gold

Finally, we welcome an impressive newcomer in the ranking: the Renault Duster, landing directly at #36 with 1,194 sales. The French SUV has received over 12,000 bookings so far and thanks to its arrival, Renault sold as many cars in July alone as it did in the previous 3 months combined. The following months will be fascinating to follow in India and predictions are for the Duster to stabilise around 3,000 units a month.

New car sales in India are up 10% year-on-year in June to 197,783 registrations, bringing the year-to-date total to 1,414,027 units, up 12% on 2011. After a couple of crazy months, the models ranking kind of returns to a more normal structure in June. The Maruti Alto is back to being the clear best-seller with 21,645 sales and 10.9% but down 7% year-on-year, followed by the Maruti Swift at 15,682 units and 7.9% (+66% year-on-year) and the Maruti DZire at 13,741 sales and 6.9% (+453% year-on-year!). The Maruti Wagon R is up 5 spots on May to return to its traditional 4th place at 5% market share. It’s below that things get heated…

Toyota Innova

The Mahindra Bolero is down one rank on last month but beats its record market share at 4.8% thanks to 9,514 sales, thanks to its facelift the Hyundai i20 stays at a best-ever 6th position but beats both volume and share records at 7,676 and 3.9%, while the Toyota Innova is perhaps the most impressive of all three, up 5 spots on May to break into the Indian Top 10 for the very first time at #7 with 6,785 units and a record 3.4% share. The Innova has now beaten its market share record every month for the last 3 months. Toyota tried to crack India with the Etios, it may well end up doing so with the Innova…

Skoda Rapid. Picture: Team-bhp

Just outside the Top 10, the Hyudnai Verna hist its best position at #11 and best share at 3%. The Tata Nano was up to a best-ever 5th place last month but is now down to #12, its first time below #10 since last November… The Maruti Ertiga takes a break, down 3 spots to #14, whereas the Mahindra XUV500 continues to beat its own records month after month, now reaching a best-ever #21 and 1.7% share. Indian car sales continue on their very healthy run, up 7% year-on-year in May to 212,998 registrations, bringing the 2012 year-to-date total to 1,216,244 units, up 12% on 2011. While last month we witnessed a once-in-a-decade event with the Maruti Swift taking the lead for the first time ever, in May the ‘traditional’ order is resumed, just. The Maruti Alto reclaims the pole position with 20,724 sales and 9.7% share, but at -18% year-on-year it is still under threat from the Swift, up a massive 57% year-on-year to 20,050 units and a record 9.4%.

Tata Nano

In fact, it’s the entire Swift family that breaks records again in May: the Maruti DZire is up 64% on May 2011 to reach 17,707 sales and 8.3% share, both volume and market share all-time highs for the model. All in all, the Swift family captures an elephant-size 17.7% of the Indian market this month! The two remaining models in the Top 5 are also in great shape: the Mahindra Bolero is #4 with 9,584 sales while the Tata Nano is up to a best-ever 5th position (it reached it once before in June 2010) thanks to 8,507 sales and 4% share. Is this the Nano renaissance Tata had been hoping for?

Maruti Ertiga

The Hyundai i20 also hits its highest position ever at #6 with 7,675 units, the Maruti Ertiga continues to impress, up 5 spots on April to #11 with a record 6,802 sales, the Honda Brio is back up to #16, the Mahindra XUV500 beats its volume and ranking records again at 3,471 sales and #23 and the Maruti Gypsy is up 20 ranks to #38.

Nissan Qashqai

Another milestone passed in March: for the first time ever, there were two Japanese models in the European Top 10 with the Toyota Yaris climbing into 10th position with 22,856 sales, helped by a record-breaking showing in the UK. India is the new China: in March 281,831 new vehicles found a buyer in the country, up 20% year-on-year and a new all-time record! The Maruti Alto has its 2nd best month ever at 35,245 sales and no less than 12 models break their monthly record, including the Maruti DZire, Hyundai Eon, Tata Nano and Honda Brio delivering the best month ever for a Honda model in India at 6,355 sales.
