World May 2013 Roundup: Europeans buy more local

Skoda Octavia. Skoda managed to place all its 7 models inside the Czech Top 10 this month…

* See the Full article by clicking on the title! *

Finally the much anticipated Worldwide May 2013 Roundup is here! First a bit of (great) news: thanks to Irina at AKAB we welcome a new country to BSCB’s monthly models sales charts updates: Kazakhstan, a market up 72% so far in 2013 after gaining…114% in 2012! Secondly, a (new) bit of overview of the largest markets with a very contrasted picture this month: China (+9%), the USA (+8%) and Brazil (+10%) are all up significantly while Japan (-9%), Germany (-10%) and Russia (-12%) all have full brakes on.

If last month the Toyota RAV4 was under the spotlight, in May we witness an interesting trend across a few European countries: whether it is a coincidence or not is something that will become clearer as the year goes by, but it would appear that European consumers have been very patriotic this month. This is something that traditionally happens when times get tough, a natural and sometime ‘subliminal’ reaction to purchase local in a view to support the homegrown industry, which nowadays often isn’t actually the case: more and more ‘local’ models are actually produced abroad…

Fiat Panda. For the first time in 16 years, the Italian Top 5 is foreign model-free…

In Italy, the Top 5 best-selling models are 100% Italian for the first time in 16 years: the Fiat Panda leads, followed by the Fiat Punto, Fiat 500, Lancia Ypsilon and Fiat 500L. In Czech Republic, Skoda manages to place its entire range (7 models!) inside the Top 10 for the first time in history: the Octavia is on top with 8.3% market share, ahead of the Fabia at #2 and 7.9%, the Rapid at #3 and hitting its best market share so far at 4.7%, the Superb at #5, Citigo at #8, Yeti at #9 and Roomster at #10.

Dacia Logan. The Romanian podium is 100% Dacia for the first time ever.

In Romania, we have the same phenomenon with Dacia: for what could well be the first time in the history of the brand, Dacia monopolises the podium at home, placing the Logan at #1 with 14.4% share, the Duster #2 at 6.5% and the Sandero at #3 with 2.9%, the nameplate’s highest position in 4 years. With the Dokker at a record 5th place and 2.7% share, Dacia also places 4 models in the Top 5 for only the second time ever after last January

ZAZ Vida. ZAZ places 3 models in the Ukrainian Top 5 this month…

Lastly in Ukraine, local carmaker ZAZ places 3 models in the Top 5: the Sens at #1, Vida at #4 and Lanos at #5. While this may have happened in the past, it is the first time ZAZ manages this feat since the creation of BestSellingCarsBlog in 2010… To be noted, there are also only 11 foreign models in the German Top 50 this month and one in the French Top 10. So there is clearly a trend, the next few months will tell us whether this was just a coincidence or the start of a longer-term shift towards local carmakers as European new car sales continue to contract…

In India, the Maruti Swift DZire (sedan) leads the ranking for the first time ever and becomes only the 5th vehicle to ever rank #1 in India in over 60 years! The Maruti Alto had been #1 in India each and every month since July 2004 except April 2012 when the Maruti Swift took the lead (that’s 105 of the last 106 months!), the Maruti 800 led the Indian market from 1985 to 2004 and the Hindustan Ambassador did so from around 1950 until 1984 (Note 1950-2004 data is not official, if you have more detail please get in touch).

India May 2013: Maruti DZire leads the ranking for the first time!

The Maruti DZire is only the 5th model to ever rank #1 in India since 1950…

* See the Top 60 best-selling models and Top 14 brands by clicking on the title! *

May is the 6th month in a row of year-on-year decline for the Indian car market at -8% to 193,338 registrations, which brings the year-to-date total to 1,081,177 units, down 11% on 2012. Historical event this month in the models ranking: the Maruti DZire (aka Swift sedan) takes the lead for the very first time with sales up 32% year-on-year to 17,265 and 8.9% market share. Reversely the Maruti Alto is down 37% or 10,000 units compared to May 2012 at 16,411 and 8.5% share… To comprehend how rare such an event is, let’s point out that the Maruti Alto had been #1 in India each and every month since July 2004 except April 2012 when the Maruti Swift took the lead. That’s 105 of the last 106 months…

The Hindustan Ambassador was the first one…

In fact, the Maruti DZire may well only be the 5th vehicle to ever rank #1 in India in over 60 years! Before the Alto, the Maruti 800 led the Indian market from 1985 to 2004 and the Hindustan Ambassador did so from around 1950 until 1984Note 1950-2004 data is not official, if you have more detail please get in touch. The new generation DZire has certainly made a huge impact with Indian consumers with the dynamic between the DZire sedan and the Swift hatchback (down 18% yoy this month) reversing itself to the profit of the sedan. Maruti is also pushing this, prioritising the more expensive DZire in their production lines.

Honda Amaze

There’s another outstanding performer in this month’s ranking: the Honda Amaze, up 5 spots on April to break into the Indian Top 10 for the very first time at #8 with a record 6,036 sales and 3.1% share. The Amaze single-handedly brings Honda to its strongest month ever in the country at 11,340 sales, passing Tata to rank 4th most popular manufacturer in India this month below Maruti, Hyundai and Mahindra… Notice also the Mahindra Scorpio breaking its ranking, volume and market share records at #11 with 5,165 sales and 2.7% and the Renault Duster down 2 to #12 but maintaining itself at a best-ever 2.7% market share. Finally, the Chevrolet Enjoy (aka Wuling Hongguang) is up 18 spots to #24 at 2,173 units for its first full month in market.

India: What changed in the last two years

The Tata Nano sold 10,021 units in India in April 2011

* See the April 2011 and April 2013 Top 30 best-selling models by clicking on the title! *

The Indian car market has gone through a lot of change in the last 2 years so today I thought I would put the April 2011 and April 2013 Indian models rankings side by side and extract a few long-term trends. First things first, the Maruti Alto has not moved from its pole position but is down 22% to 19,847 sales. In fact the Alto has been #1 in India every month since except exactly one year ago in April 2012 when it was toppled by the Maruti Swift. The Swift family is actually the big gainer over the period: the DZire sedan has gone from #4 with 11,797 sales two years ago to #2 and 19,446 and the Swift hatchback from #5 and 10,622 units to #3 and 16,531.

Maruti Alto 800

If two years ago Hyundai managed to place the i10 in 2nd place, Maruti now monopolises the Top 4, with the Mahindra Bolero the most popular non-Maruti model at #5 (vs. #11 in 2011). However there are 3 Hyundais in the Top 10 like in 2011: the Eon at #6, i10 at #7 and i20 at #8. One of (if not the) biggest changes in the last two years has been the fall and fall of the Tata Nano. In April 2011 the Nano sold 10,021 units (its first and only time above 10,000 monthly sales) and ranked 6th but last month it was down to 39th with just 948 sales.

Renault Duster

Renault has done the impossible and gone from virtually nothing two years ago to 6,000+ monthly sales this year, thanks to one model: the Duster which brilliantly ranked 10th last month with 5,362 units. Other newcomers in the ranking include the Maruti Ertiga at #11, Honda Amaze at #13, Chevrolet Sail Sedan at #23 and Mahindra XUV500 at #24…

World 2 months 2013: Toyota Corolla #1, Wuling Rongguang #6

Toyota Corolla XI (Japanese version): still ahead worldwide.

* See the Top 200 best-selling models by clicking on the title! Many thanks to Austin *

Now that we have gone through the worldwide February ranking in detail, the year-to-date updates designed to extract longer-term trends are back! Like in 2012 the Toyota Corolla takes the lead over the Ford Focus, but just: 164,463 sales vs. 161,998… Note the Corolla figure includes the 9th, 10th and 11th generations but not the Corolla hatch/Auris while the Focus figure includes the 2nd and 3rd generation, both in hatch, sedan and station wagon formats. The Hyundai Elantra is also faithful to its 2012 third position over the period thanks to 141,061 units sold while the Ford F-Series is up one spot to #4 and the VW Passat up 2 to #5.

The Renault Clio/Symbol is #26 worldwide so far in 2013 vs. #33 in 2012.

Boosted by an out-of-this-world third place in February, the Wuling Hongguang is now #6 year-to-date in 2013 with 111,861 sales which is already one third of its total sales for 2012 when it ranked #57 worldwide… The VW Polo/Vento is up 3 ranks compared to 2012 at #8, the VW Jetta and Suzuki Swift/DZire are both up 6 to #13 and #14 respectively, the VW Lavida is up a whopping 61 spots to #20 solely thanks to its #1 passenger car ranking in China, the Chevrolet Silverado is up 7 to #21, Nissan Sentra/Sylphy/Pulsar/Tsuru up 30 to #25 and the Renault Clio/Symbol is up 7 to #26.

The Hyundai Santa Fe is up from #90 in 2012 to #54 so far in 2013

Further down, notice the ChangAn Minibus up 33 ranks on its Full Year 2012 ranking to #31, the Ford Fusion/Mondeo up 36 to #32, Wuling Rongguang up 8 to #34, Kia Forte/Cerato/K3 up 9 to #36, Nissan Altima/Teana/Maxima up 13 to #38, Renault Duster up 17 to #44, Toyota Prius C up 10 to #48, Hyundai Santa Fe up 26 to #54, Honda NBOX up 30 to #64, Peugeot 208 up 24 to a still shy #66, BYD F3 up 54 to #72, Ford Explorer up 30 to #76 and the Nissan Note up a huge 95 spots to #79.

World February 2013: Wuling Hongguang up to #3!

Wuling Hongguang

* See the Top 200 best-selling models by clicking on the title! Many thanks to Austin *

It always takes a little longer to gather worldwide data and for February we have the rare addition of Thailand to make the ranking ever closer to official figures. And strong Thailand sales push the Toyota Corolla ahead of the Ford Focus like in 2012 both this month with 78,631 sales vs. 75,723 for the Focus and year-to-date at 164,463 units vs. 161,998. Still extremely close though. Note this figure excludes Corolla hatch/Auris sales. Massive event this month: even though it is only sold in China (for now), the Wuling Hongguang manages to land in third position worldwide thanks to a record 64,096 sales. That’s 500 more than 3 generations of Hyundai Elantra managed to sell all over the world – this should not take away from the excellent score of the Korean model though but just gives a bit of perspective.

Suzuki Swift DZire

A few other models shine this month in the world ranking: the Ford F-Series is up to a fantastic 5th position at 62,937 units, the Suzuki Swift/DZire is up 9 spots to brilliantly breaks into the worldwide Top 10 at #10 with a huge 48,557 sales (78% of which achieved in India alone), the Chevrolet Silverado is up 12 to #14, the Renault Clio/Symbol up 10 to #21, Ford Fusion/Mondeo also up 10 to #23, Ford Escape/Kuga up 13 to #33, Toyota Prius C up 12 to #40 and passing the Toyota Prius again (#41), Renault Duster up 3 to #42 and the Toyota RAV4 up 7 to #48.

India April 2013: Maruti DZire threatens Alto for pole position!

Maruti DZire

Would the Indian new car market have plateaued already? In April it is down for the 5th consecutive month at -8% year-on-year to 199,496 registrations. This brings the year-to-date total to 887,839 units, down 11% on 2012. One year ago the Maruti Swift became only the 4th model since 1950 to snap the monthly pole position. This time it’s the sedan version, the Maruti DZire, that narrowly misses that feat. It sells a magnificent 19,446 units in April for a record 9.7% market share, only 401 units below the Maruti Alto, down below 20,000 monthly sales for the first time since last August. It’s interesting to notice that this the DZire’s 2nd highest volume behind last month’s 19,446 and it’s only the 4th time ever it manages to beat the Swift after last AugustSeptember and March

Honda Amaze

The top of the models ranking is very stable, with the Top 8 absolutely identical to the 2013 year-to-date charts. The Renault Duster manages to stay within the Indian Top 10 for the second month in a row at #10 with 5,362 sales, improving its market share to a record 2.7%. For its 2nd month in market, the Honda Amaze is up 15 ranks to #13 at 4,852 units, but this performance is at the detriment of both the Brio (-58% on March) and City (-44%)…

Chevrolet Enjoy

The Chevrolet Sail sedan is up 6 spots to #23 at a record 2,469 sales while the Tata Nano falls further into oblivion: after 3 months at a horrid 1,500 sales, it is now down 37% to just 948 units, the model’s lowest ever monthly tally and first time below 1,000 sales. It ranks #39. Finally we welcome a new model in the Indian ranking this month: the Chevrolet Enjoy at #42 with 691 units. If you are a faithful reader of BSCB you will know that this is none other than a rebadged Wuling Hongguang, currently the best-selling LCV in China!

World March 2013 Roundup: Don’t take this the wrong way, but…

The Nissan Qashqai strikes again…

* See the Full article by clicking on the title! *

As promised yesterday it’s a fast turnaround to give you the World March roundup. In February the Nissan Qashqai was the worldwide star of the month, and in March, well don’t take this the wrong way but…

Alright so France is under the spotlight this month, not so much for the market’s performance, struggling as much as the rest of Europe, but for two historical events: in the Light Commercial Vehicle ranking, not usually the subject of much talk in my monthly roundups, an import takes the lead for the first time ever: the Fiat Ducato is #1 with 2,777 sales and 8.4% share. In the Passenger Cars ranking, the Nissan Qashqai (well well…) is only the 2nd Japanese model to manage to ever crack the monthly French Top 10 at #9 with 3,381 sales and 2% share. The only other one is the Toyota Yaris which did so in January and March 2007.

Fiat Ducato

So yes, the Qashqai is once again the star of the month, and is actually even more impressive in March than it was in February. It takes the lead year-to-date in Spain, breaks its ranking, volume and share records in Italy at #6 with 4,142 sales and 3.1%, climbs onto the podium in Austria for the very first time and lodges a 2nd consecutive month at a record #5 in the overall European models ranking with a massive 29,116 sales. Told you.

Fiat 500L

The third hero of the month is Italian, making it 2 in 3. For the first time, the Fiat 500L outsells its ‘inspiration’ the Fiat 500 at home in Italy, ranking at an outstanding 4th place. Finally the last big event worldwide happened in Australia. For the first time in the history of automobile there, the Top 4 manufacturers are 100% Asian this month (Toyota-Mazda-Nissan-Hyundai), with local manufacturer Holden relegated to 5th place and passed by Hyundai for the first time. It would be like Renault ranking 5th in France below Volkswagen, Nissan, Toyota and Ford…

Better late than never I hear you say and you would be correct. Here come the much awaited February Roundup, albeit in a slightly more succinct version, with the March Roundup coming up very shortly.

Now. I’ve got three words for you this month: Qashqai, HB20 and VWChina…

I know I am going to sound like a broken record but this month (as in March as you already know) the Nissan Qashqai reaches new heights once again in Europe and so I have decided to make it the worldwide star of the month. This model hasn’t stopped turning all the traditional European car sales trends on their heads since its introduction in 2007. Whereas it is basically now 6 years old with a slight facelift, in February it hit a record 5th place in the overall European models ranking, up 4% year-on-year in a market down 10% and by far the best ranking ever reached by a Japanese model on the continent…

Hyundai HB20

In Brazil the Hyundai HB20 is up to an incredible 4th position thanks to 10,179 sales for a record 4.6% share. This is the first time a Korean model manages to sell over 10,000 monthly units and to rank within the Brazilian monthly Top 5. And this could just be the beginning… Launched exactly at the same time, the Chevrolet Onix follows at #5.

VW Lavida

For its part, Volkswagen tightens its grip on the Chinese passenger car market, placing no less than 6 models in The Top 8! The Lavida is #1, the Passat #4, Sagitar #5, Jetta #6, Tiguan #7 and Polo #8… In other news, The Nissan Leaf is up to a world-best 5th place in Norway and the new generation VW Golf is an instant success in Italy, climbing onto the third step of the podium there this month, its first time since… November 1993! It’s the reverse in Switzerland: for the 2nd month in a row and the 4th time in the last 6 months after SeptemberOctober and January, the Skoda Octavia is the most popular model in the country, above the VW Golf, traditional leader there.

Being the last month of the financial year, March is traditionally the year’s strongest month for new car sales in India and 2013 doesn’t look like it will be an exception. At 243,844 registrations however, the market is surprisingly down 13% on March 2012 which was, granted, the all-time record for any month in the history of automobile in India. Year-to-date, sales add up to 688,343 – a 12% drop over 2012. The Maruti Alto still reigns supreme but sees its market share slide down to 11.2% at 27,356 sales, its 4th consecutive month above 25,000 units. The Maruti Dzire is the performer of the month once again: it breaks its monthly volume record for the 2nd month in a row at 20,078 sales, becoming only the third model to ever sell more than 20,000 monthly units in India after the Maruti Alto (in March 2007 for the first time) and Swift (in February 2012).

Maruti DZire

This means the DZire manages to beat its hatchback twin the Maruti Swift for only the third time ever, however the previous two were in August and September last year when sales were disrupted by the arrival of the new generation. By the way the Swift does extremely well this month also at 19,654 sales, its best score since May 2012. Very solid performance of the Maruti Wagon R at #4 and 14,681 units while the Mahindra Bolero simply lodges its strongest ever month at 11,675 sales, the 5th time it is 10,000 units in the last 6 months.

Toyota Innova

Two additional Top 10 models beat their all-time volume record this month: the Toyota Innova is up to 8th place with 8,422 units (previous best: 6,794 in January 2012) and the Renault Duster can’t stop amazing its world, breaking into the Indian Top 10 for the first time at #10 with 6,313 sales (previous best: 5,590 last month). Notice also the Toyota Etios up to #15, its highest ranking since December 2011, the Toyota Liva up to #22 (highest since January 2012), the Honda Amaze landing directly at #28 with 2,552 sales for its first month in market and the Chevrolet Sail Sedan up 7 spots to a best-ever #29 at 2,232 units.

As expected, Japanese models are very well represented in the 2012 worldwide models ranking, starting with the #1 spot held by the Toyota Corolla with 1,097,132 sales. Then we find the Toyota Camry at #4 and 797,466 units, the Nissan Tiida/Versa/Sunny at #8 with 774,846 sales, Toyota Yaris/Vios at #12 and 708,619 units and the Honda Civic at #14 with 656,164 sales.

Suzuki Swift DZire World 2012Suzuki Swift DZire

As we go through the most successful Japanese models in the world, it’s interesting to notice different models relying on different markets, showing how omnipresent across the planet Nippon carmakers have become. If the Camry and Honda Accord lodge a big part of their sales in the USA, the Toyota Hilux at #15 draws from South-East Asia, Australia and South America while the Suzuki Swift/Dzire at #19 relies mainly on India and the Toyota Avanza/Daihatsu Xenia at #64 gets the bulk of its worldwide sales from Indonesia…

Mitsubishi ASX World 2012Mitsubishi ASX

Notice also the Toyota RAV4 at #11 Japanese and #31 overall, a ranking that should improve in 2013 with the arrival of the new generation across worldwide dealerships, the Toyota Prius at #13 and #38, Toyota Prius C at #18 and #56, Nissan Qashqai/Dualis at #20 and #60 and the Mitsubishi ASX at #57 and #187, one of the best-selling Japanese  cars in the world.
