Sri Lanka: Nissan Sunny continues long-term domination

* Click on title for street scenes! *

The observation of the streets of Colombo through YouTube videos shows a Sri Lankan market inspired by its neighbour India (Maruti Alto definitely in the Top 3), but with strong specificities: the Nissan Sunny seems to have been by far the best selling car in the country for many years.

Other specificities include the Honda Civic, Toyota Vios and Toyota Avanza likely to be in the Top 5. One Indian trait is the Tata Indica also looking like being pretty successful in Sri Lanka.

Bhutan 2009

Thimphu street

Observation of the streets of the capital Thimphu through YouTube videos indicate a Bhutanese market very similar to its neighbour India: out of 3,168 imported cars in 2009, 42% were Marutis and 31% Hyundais. The Maruti Alto, Hyundai Santro and Hyundai i10 look like the best-sellers in Bhutan.

Israel January-October 2010: Mazda3 and Chevrolet Cruze shine

The Israeli market is very healthy over the first 10 months of 2010 at 176,684 registrations and +28%. Mazda is still the #1 manufacturer but its margin over #2 Hyundai has reduced dramatically: 25,808 sales vs. 24,974.

The rankings by segment are extremely stable this year with the Mazda2, 3 and 6 still dominating passenger cars and the Hyundai Tucson #1 in the 4WD segment. In all likeliness, the Mazda3 is #1 overall ahead of the Toyota Corolla and the Chevrolet Cruze.

Myanmar: More information needed

Observation of the streets of Yangon through YouTube videos bring to light a particular situation in the Myanmar car market: very high import taxes make new cars an out of reach prospect for most consumers, and in this context, the 1992 Toyota Corolla Station Wagon swarm the streets, and the 1998 Nissan Sunny and 1993 Suzuki Wagon R are also very present. A few extremely rare 2007 Toyota Corolla and 2005 Toyota Hilux can also be seen.

Hong Kong (China) 2010: Toyota and Mercedes dominate

Toyota leads the car sales in Hong Kong with over 2,400 registrations during the first 6 months of 2010, a 63% increase over 2009. Models that seem to sell well include the Noah (at one stage declared the best-selling Toyota passenger car in HK), Wish, Camry (#1 in 2006 when I last got an official sales ranking) and Previa.

Mercedes-Benz is the #2 car manufacturer in Hong Kong with 3,815 registrations over the first 10 months of 2010, growing by 45% over 2009. The Mercedes E Class sold 1,673 units during the period (+76%), which should definitely allow it a place on the models ranking podium.

Singapore January-October 2010: Kia Cerato Forte #1

Launched in February 09 (October for the Koup) and just #4 in 2009, the Kia Cerato Forte is the best-selling car in Singapore over the first 10 months 2010, when including the Koup sales.

The Toyota Corolla Altis is #2 for the third year in a row, and the Hyundai Avante (aka Elantra), best-seller in 2009, drops to #3. Official figures don’t include Mercedes and BMW models but it is speculated that the E Class and the 5 Series could feature as high as #3 and #4 respectively…

Philippines 6 months 2010: Vios and Innova on top

In a very dynamic market (up 37% on ’09 with 82,147 registrations), Toyota dominates at 32% market share, and places the Vios (aka Yaris sedan) in the lead with 1,502 sales in June, ahead of the Toyota Innova at 1,154.

Mitsubishi is also very strong at 19% market share (one of its best markets in the world, if not the best) and should see the Fuzion (aka Zinger), Adventure (built in the country) and Montero (aka Challenger) hold very high positions in the rankings. The Hyundai Tucson new gen is a hit: 819 sales in March only! The Isuzu Crosswind should also be in the Top 10.

Switzerland 6 months 2010: Golf and Octavia clear leaders

The Swiss car market is handling well in 2010 with +7% over the 1st half of the year and 143,046 registrations.

Not surprisingly, the VW Golf is by far the best-selling model in the country, but its market share (4.2%) is much weaker than in Germany (8.2%) and Austria (5.2%). And contrary to those two countries, the Skoda Octavia grabs the second spot at 2.6%, ahead of the VW Polo at 1.9%. The Swiss market is indeed the most fragmented in Europe (and perhaps the world) with only two models above 2% market share.

Other strong performers are the new gen Opel Astra (6th), Seat Ibiza (10th), Renault Megane (11th), BMW X1 (21st), Dacia Sandero (26th but 16th in Quarter 2) and the Mercedes E Class (12th in Q2).

Canada 2009: Ford F-Series dominates

Canadian car sales rankings by nameplate have become very difficult to obtain in 2010, so much so that the latest figures I have date back from November 2009. If you have more recent info about the Canadian car market please get in touch!

To get a more general idea, let’s add the sales figures for the 3 months up to November 09: the Ford F-Series then leads the way (19,207 sales) ahead of three small passenger cars: the Honda Civic (15,776), the Toyota Corolla (13,742) and the Mazda3 (11,541). The Dodge Caravan, traditionally on the Canadian podium, is only 7th over the period with 10,694 registrations.

Europe October 2010: Golf & Polo back on top, Megane #6

Steep 16% decline this month for the European car market with again all its powerhouse countries (Germany, France, Italy, UK and Spain) showing sharp drops.

After a month of September artificially biased towards UK-strong cars, most models come back to their YTD market share levels. The VW Golf is back to 3.6%, the Polo climbs back to #2 at 2.8% and is still the only Top 10 car to progress vs. Oct 09 (+13%). All other Top 10 models see their sales drop faster than the market. The Polo will however stay #3 in 2010 as the Ford Fiesta is too far ahead in #2 with 351,177 sales YTD.

The Renault Clio is back in 4th at 2.5%, and the Renault Megane goes up 3 spots in 6th to deliver its 2nd best 2010 performance after a 5th place and 2.2% in July.
