India October 2018: Hyundai Santro returns with a splash directly #11

The legendary Hyundai Santro has returned to the Indian market.

The Indian new car market is back in positive territory after three consecutive months of decline with October wholesales up 2.2% to 283.806 units, leading to a year-to-date volume up 6.5% to a record-breaking 2.874.948 dealership deliveries. For once Maruti (+1%) trails its home market, resulting in a relatively weak 47.9% share vs. 51% so far in 2018, but Hyundai (+5%), Mahindra (+5%) and Tata (+11%) all gain market share year-on-year to round up the Top 4. Below, only Ford – up a spectacular 114% thanks to the success of the new Ecosport and Freestyle – stands out while Toyota (+2%), Honda (-0.3%) are slow and Jeep (-53%), Renault (-24%), Datsun (-20%) and Volkswagen (-13%) sink due to the lack of successful new launches.

Model-wise, the Maruti Alto (+14%) snaps its second pole position in the past three months but remains 14.000 units below the Maruti Dzire (-16%) year-to-date while the Maruti Baleno (+28%) gains two spots on September to rank #2 for only the second time in history after July 2017. The Top Five is once again 100% Maruti with the Swift (+43%) fully benefitting from the new generation and Vitara Brezza (+36%) breaking its all-time monthly volume record at 15.832. The Hyundai Elite i20 (+21%) scores its third highest volume ever at 13.290 (below 13.390 in February 2018 and 13.319 in March 2018), distancing the Hyundai Creta (+27%) for its part scoring its highest ever tally at 11.702. The Mahindra Marazzo is up 35% on last month to 3.810, but the real big news of October in India are elsewhere…

The original 1998 Santro launched the Hyundai marque in India.

This month the legendary Hyundai Santro nameplate is reborn to replace the Eon in the Korean lineup and it returns into the Indian sales charts with a splash: directly #11 with 8.535 wholesales. The Santro is the car that launched Hyundai in India back in 1998, an instant blockbuster climbing to the overall annual #2 spot as early as in 2000 and propelling the carmaker onto the Indian podium that same year, a position it hasn’t left since. The Santro introduced the “tall boy” segment later emulated by the Maruti Wagon R and reached an annual volume record of 140.679 in 2006, hitting a record 16.838 units in March of that year. Big shoes to fill for the new generation Santro, but the start is promising: 8.535 units is a volume that took the first generation Santro 54 months to achieve (9.086 sales in March 2003 after launching in October 1998) and it is a level the Santro nameplate hasn’t seen since March 2010, a full 5 years below disappearing from the charts in December 2014.

Thailand September 2018: Hilux at highest in 2 years, market up 14.3%

The Toyota Hilux now looks like it could snap the annual win off the Isuzu D-Max.

The Thai new vehicle market continues to align outstanding results month after month with September up 14.3% to 88.706 units marking the 13th consecutive month of double-digit gains. The year-to-dat tally now stands at 746.584 registrations, up 20.3% on the same period in 2017, still on track to break the million annual sales milestone for the first time since 2013 with BSCB estimates still putting the 2018 Thailand market around the 1.050.000 mark. Toyota (+39%) continues to catch up on lost time, almost tripling the market growth to hit 32.4% share, its highest since November 2016 (36.3%) after a low of 23.6% in August 2017. Isuzu (-22%) is struggling to 14.7% share vs. 16.8% YTD with Honda (+6%) now menacing at 12.7% in September. The remainder of the Top 7 all outpace the market, led by Mazda (+33%), Mitsubishi (+28%), Ford (+22%) and Nissan (+21%). But it’s Chinese MG (+81%), recently graduated to local producer, that remains the best performer in the Top 10, albeit down to 2% share vs. 2.4% so far in 2018 (+108%).

Over in the models ranking, the Toyota Hilux surges 68% year-on-year to sign a 5th consecutive win, something it hadn’t achieved since December 2016, hitting 16.5% share which is also its highest since December 2016. After outselling its archenemy the Isuzu D-Max (-27%) by 131 units in May, 1.939 in June, 1.032 in July and 1.632 in August, the Hilux’s advantage is a gargantuan 4.160 units this month, reducing the gap separating its from the #1 YTD spot, still held by the D-Max, to just 2.288 (105.321 vs. 103.033) with three months remaining in 2018. If last month a Hilux annual win seemed uncertain, it now looks like a logical ending to a tumultuous 2018. The Ford Ranger (+34%) grows comfortably faster than the market to cement its third position overall, distancing the Mazda2 (+33%) and Toyota Yaris (+180%). Further down, the Nissan March (+57%), Honda HR-V (+49%), Suzuki Swift (+43%) and Nissan Almera (+40%) impress. The Toyota C-HR (#16) tops recent launches (<12 months) above the Mitsubishi Xpander (#20) up 9 spots on August and the MG ZS (#21).

Hungary October 2018: Suzuki and Vitara top market back in positive

The Suzuki Vitara is the best-selling vehicle in Hungary in October.

New car sales in Hungary manage to edge back up into positive territory in October at +5.4% to 10.923 registrations, a ratio it replicates year-to-date at 115.549. Brand leader Suzuki (-4%) hasn’t quite recovered from pre-WLTP just yet, also penalised by a slow changeover of the facelifted Vitara, but remains solidly in the lead at 13.5% share, distancing Ford (+10%) just as Toyota soars 42% year-on-year to hit a round 10% share in third position vs. 7.8% and #6 YTD. Dacia (+43%) up to #5, Nissan (+35%) back up to #8, Kia (+21%) at #9 and Skoda (+12%) also post fantastic results in the remainder of the Top 10 whereas Volkswagen (-45%) and Opel (-25%) struggle mightily. Model-wise, the Suzuki Vitara (-2%) is back in charge after a weak September score ahead of the Skoda Octavia (+27%) and Suzuki SX4 S-Cross (+27%), replicating the YTD podium while the Dacia Duster (+26%) and Fiat 500 (+63%) also post outstanding gains. Finally, at #10 notice the Toyota C-HR scoring its second ever Top 10 finish after last January (#9).

France October 2018: PSA, Toyota help contain post-WLTP drop to -1.5%

14 months after launch, the C3 Aircross hits a record 2.5% share, helping Citroen up 14.7%.

The pre-WLTP rush aftermath, after cutting new car sales in France by 12.8% in September, has greatly reduced its impact with October registrations down just 1.5% to 173.799, in fact -5.8% in daily rates given this month has one additional opening day compared to October 2017. The year-to-date tally is now up 5.7% to 1.836.481 which is now the 4th largest 10 month volume in French history below 1990 (1.973.172), 1989 (1.921.716), 2001 (1.912.485) and 2011 (1.837.474). Private sales happily go against the market at +3.3% to 92.635 sales and 53.3% share vs. just 50.8% in October 2017. In contrast, artificial sales are logically panting with short-term rentals freefalling 24% and demo sales down 4%. So far this year, private sales also outpace the market at +6.7% to 881.500 units and 48% share vs. 47.5% over the same period in 2017.

Peugeot is the best-selling carmaker at home for the 6th time this year: a first.

Peugeot (+8.3%) vastly outperforms its home market once again to remain in first position for the 6th time in the past 10 months, a situation unheard of before in France. The brand benefits from its outstanding handling of the transition to WLTP with its entire lineup compliant well before the September 1 deadline, and crosses the symbolic 20% share mark for the 2nd time this year – and this decade – bettering its score to 20.12%. Peugeot sees its company sales up 9.5% (including long-term leases) to snap the #1 brand title on this channel with 12.569 sales vs. 10.486 for Renault (-8.2%), its private sales grow by 6.5% to 15.808, demo sales are up 21% to 4.041 and self-registrations are up 41.7% to 1.136 due to the launch of the Rifter and the new generation 508.

Toyota outsells Volkswagen to rank #1 foreign marque in France for the 2nd straight month.

Renault (-9.7%) falls faster than its home market, once again paying the price of overusing artificial registrations in the pre-WLTP period last summer. Showing an encouraging turn of events, Citroen (+14.7%) posts a third double-digit gain in the past 4 months to hit 10.8% share, its highest since last January (11%). Even more encouraging is Citroen’s stunning 33% uptick with private buyers this month. Cementing its 4th place YTD above Volkswagen, Dacia (+19.4%) brilliantly signs the largest gain in the Top 15, while Toyota (+18.3%) also posts an extremely strong result to remain inside the French Top 5 for only the 2nd time in history after last month. Other great performers include Seat (+26.5%), Volvo (+22.2%, +38% for private sales), Skoda (+15.5%), Mercedes (+14.7%, private +17.6%), Ford (+13.7%, private +17.6%), Mini (+8.2%), Hyundai (+8%, private +19.6%), Kia (+7.9%) and Opel (+5.2%, private +16.9%). At the other end of the scale, Volkswagen (-23.6%) whose lineup isn’t yet 100% WLTP-compliant, continues to struggle but the hardest hit in the Top 20 are Audi (-53.3%) and Nissan (-48.6%) and further down Infiniti (-93%) at 10 sales vs. 421 in August, Alfa Romeo (-71.3%), Porsche (-71.3%) and Land Rover (-61.3%).

Volvo private sales soar 38% year-on-year in France this month, mainly thanks to the XC40. 

The top of the models ranking returns to the YTD order with the Renault Clio (+9%), Peugeot 208 (+6%), Peugeot 3008 (+15%) and Citroen C3 (+20%) the most popular. In fact, the entire Top 6 best-sellers go against the market and post solid gains: add the Peugeot 308 (+7%) and Dacia Sandero (+17%), and there are only 3 declining nameplates in the Top 15: the Renault Megane (-25%), Captur (-20%) and Peugeot 2008 (-7%). The Citroen C3 Aircross soars 102% to secure its 4th ever Top 10 finish at home at #9 after last January (#10), July (#9) and September (#10). Finally the Renault Twingo (+30%) continues to take full advantage of the scrappage scheme put in place in the country. Just outside the Top 10 at #11, the Toyota Yaris (+26%) confirms it is the favourite foreigner in France – albeit produced locally – distancing the Ford Fiesta (+60%) at #14, Opel Corsa (+39%) at #16, VW Polo (-16%) at #17, Fiat 500 (-16%) at #19 and Toyota C-HR (+70%) at #22, equalling its ranking record also hit last August. The DS 7 Crossback (+581%), Renault Zoe (+125%), Fiat Panda (+80%), Opel Crossland X (+51%), Citroen C4 Cactus (+49%) and Ford Ecosport (+44%) also impress in the Top 50 just as the VW T-Roc (#30) tops all recent launches (<12 months).

Australia October 2018: Hilux most dominant nameplate in 13 years, market endures 7th consecutive decline

The Toyota Hilux has now been #1 in Australia for 12 straight months.

Real estate investment is one of Australia’s hobbies, and lower property prices in Sydney and Melbourne this year go a long way in explaining the continued slump the Australian new vehicle market is experiencing in 2018. Sales are down for the 7th consecutive month in October at -5.3% to 90.718 units, bringing the year-to-date tally down 1.3% to 971.723, still the third largest volume at this stage of the year below 2017 (984.931) and 2016 (980.433). Seven straight months of decline in Australia is something we haven’t seen in over four years, a time that saw 8 consecutive negative months between January and August 2014. Replicating the adverse real estate market situation, New South Wales (-9.2% to 28.575) is the worst performing state this month, with South Australia (-5.1% to 5.533), Northern Territory (-4.7% to 709), Victoria (-4.2% to 26.914), Queensland (-2.7% to 17.375), Australian Capital (-2.1% to 1.418) and Western Australia (-1.7% to 8.318) also in difficulty. Only Tasmania (+0.3% to 1.876) edges up. Year-to-date, once again Tasmania (+6.8% to 16.786) leads the pack ahead of Western Australia (+1% to 81.927), Victoria (+0.6% to 280.368) and Queensland (+0.4% to 195.158) whereas all other States and Territories are in decline, led by New South Wales (-4.8% to 314.901), Northern Territory (-4% to 8.886), South Australia (-1.9% to 58.340) and Australian Capital (-0.5% to 15.357). The impact of a depressed New South Wales – in effect Sydney – is so great that removing that State from the equation leads to a growing Australian market in 2018 at +0.4% to 656.822.

The Ranger leaps up 14% to account for 65% of Ford sales in Australia this month.

Another indicator of the current pessimistic consumer outlook that may have been worsened by the declining exchange rate and the drought’s impact on GDP is private sales in sharp decline in October at -12% to 37.335 units and 41.2% share vs. 44.3% a year ago compared to -6.6% year-to-date to 438.402 and 45.1% share vs. 47.6% over the same period in 2017. Business sales (-4.1%) fare better at 37.940 units and 41.8% share vs. 41.3% in October 2017, even positing a positive result YTD at +1.6% to 402.062 and 41.4% share vs. 40.2% in 2017. But this month it’s artificial channels that prevent the market from falling any further with rental sales bouncing up 15% year-on-year to 8.357 and 9.2% share vs. 7.6% a year ago – they are up 13.7% YTD at 65.149 – and government sales up 6.7% to 3.305. There’s nothing stopping the SUV surge: that segment soars 8.1% year-on-year to 39.849 or 43.9% share vs. 38.5% a year ago, in line with the +8.1% it commands YTD to 417.673 and 43% share vs. 39% over the same period a year ago whereas passenger cars implode at -23.6% to 27.802 and 30.6% share vs. 38% a year ago, much worse than its 14.4% YTD fall to 322.126 and 33.1% vs. 38.2%. It does look like what consumers are doing is simply upgrading from a passenger car to an SUV as the light commercial segment (mainly pickups or “utes” as they are called here) is stable at +1% to 19.286 in October and +1.7% to 197.679 YTD, heavy commercials gain 10.8% to 3.781 this month and 15.1% YTD to 34.245.

The Subaru Forester surges 82% year-on-year to break its ranking record at #7.

Looking at country of origin, Japan leads the way at 28.110 (+3.9%) ahead of Thailand at 22.366 (-2%) – the origin of almost all pickup trucks sold in Australia, South Korea at 13.290 (-13.7%), Germany at 6.856 (-6.4%), the USA at 3.978 (+7.1%), England at 2.327 (-15.8%), the Czech Republic at 1.325 (+57.6%), Mexico at 1.198 (+103.1%), Spain at 1.196 (-6%) and China at 1.130, up a smashing 182.5%. There were 38 Australian-made cars sold in October (-99.3%) – one Ford, three Toyotas and 34 Holdens – a logical evolution as local production ended exactly a year ago on October 20. Year-to-date, Japan once again is on top at 300.405 (+6.2%) followed by Thailand at 251.158 (-2%), South Korea at 144.5700 (-1.9%), Germany at 78.925 (+4.2%), the USA at 37.199 (-9.9%), England at 27.841 (-5.3%), Spain at 12.349 (-12%), Hungary at 9.875 (-13.3%), the Czech Republic at 9.760 (+9.2%), Mexico at 9.128 (+210.1%) and China at 8.426 (+120.4%). Below there is South Africa (6.830), Poland (6.684), Argentina (4.992), Finland (4.840) and Australia at 4.182 (-91.4%).

Can the Acadia, a GMC rebadge, put Holden back on track at home?

Brand leader Toyota (-0.1%) braves the surrounding gloom to post an almost identical score year-on-year, resulting in a very sturdy 19.6% market share vs. 18.8% so far in 2018. Mazda (+1.5%) bounces back up two spots on last month to return to the 2nd place it holds year-to-date, outpacing Hyundai (-15.5%) and Mitsubishi (+12%), the latter posting the largest year-on-year gain in the Top 18. After receding to #6 last month and allowing the Top 5 to be 100% Asian for the first time in Australian history, Ford (-7.3%) is back up one rank to #5 but still trails the market, while embattled Holden (-32%) appallingly loses one-third of its October 2017 volume – just as its once-superstar nameplate, the Commodore, implodes down 73% – but gains 4 spots on last month to #6, hitting its highest share since January at 5.8%. Hopefully the new GMC-rebadge Acadia will help: it lands this month at #91. Only Kia (+7.7%) gains ground in the remainder of the Top 10, while further down MG (+747.6%), Ferrari (+460%), Great Wall (+260%), Ram (+227.5%), LDV (+108.8%), Haval (+74.1%), Aston Martin (+71.4%), Volvo (+68.1%), Jaguar (+43%), Alfa Romeo (+25.3%) and Porsche (+18.9%) make waves.

Mitsubishi (+12%) is the only double-digit gainer in the Top 15, the Eclipse Cross is the #1 2018 launch.

The Toyota Hilux (+15%) cements its domination of the Australian market by celebrating one full year (=12 consecutive months) in pole position at a towering 4.9% share. This is the longest stretch of consecutive #1 finishes in over 13 years: since the Holden Commodore ranked #1 for 22 consecutive months between October 2003 and July 2005. The Hilux is one percentage point above its main rival the Ford Ranger (+14%), also in excellent shape thanks to the introduction of the range-topping Raptor variant. Both “utes” score higher sales thanks to very healthy 4×4 variants up 16.4% to 3.456 for the Hilux (and up 10% to 31.898 YTD) and up 16.8% to 3.094 for the Ranger (up 0.6% to 30.674 YTD). Having the Hilux and Ranger atop Australian sales charts is the new normal, but it was only two years ago inn October 2016 that it happened for the first time. It has since occurred 17 times over the past 24 months. Three passenger cars round up the Top 5 as per the YTD order: the Toyota Corolla (-14%), Mazda3 (+7%) and Hyundai i30 (-49%).

The Alpine A110 has landed in Australia.

In 6th place the Mazda CX-5 (-7%) reclaims the title of best-selling SUV in Australia but the real performer is just below: the Subaru Forester soars 82% year-on-year and 8 spots on September to land in 7th position with 1.792 sales and 2% share, new ranking and volume records. The only two times the Forester ever managed a Top 10 finish in Australia were in in August 2008 and April 2009 when it ranked #10 both times. Its previous record volume is 1.690 in June 2010 and the Forester reached 2% share once before, in August 2008. The Mitsubishi ASX (+13%) and Nissan X-Trail (-7%) make it four SUVs in the October Top 10, the most of any segment. Also of note in the Top 50 are the performances of the Hyundai Santa Fe (+76%), Toyota Prado (+68%), VW Tiguan (+65%), Mercedes GLC (+48%), VW Polo (+48%), Hyundai Kona (+43%), Toyota C-HR (+34%) at a record #31 and Kia Sportage (+21%). The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross (#50) is the best-selling recent launch (<12 months) above the Holden Equinox (#71), Volvo XC40 (#83) and Mazda CX-8 (#85), the Lamborghini Uris is up 150% on September to #255 and we welcome the Alpine A110 at #230 and the Audi Q8 at #258.

UK nations October 2018: VW Tiguan superstar – #1 in Northern Ireland

The VW Tiguan is #1 in Northern Ireland, while breaking into the Scottish and Welsh Top 10.

Thanks to our partnership with  we can share with you the Top 10 best-sellers for all UK nations in October. Keep in mind this is a zoom in by nation, all sales figures are already included in the October 2018 UK update. Uncharacteristically, only England (-3.8%) is in negative this month at 131.339 registrations, with Northern Ireland (+8.4%) at 3.810, Wales (+6.1%) at 5.721 and Scotland (+1%) at 12.429 all posting sturdy results. The weight of England in the UK total (86%) means the month is in negative overall. Year-to-date, all UK nations decline this time with Northern Ireland (-3.7%) at 47.582 resisting best ahead of Wales (-3.7%) at 69.874, England (-7.2%) at 1.777.913 and Scotland (-9.7%) at 164.199.

The Peugeot 2008 scores its very first Top 10 in any UK nation: directly #5 in Wales.

As it has been the case for the past two months, the Ford Fiesta tops 3 out of 4 nations: this time it’s England, Scotland and Wales, but ranks at a paltry 8th place in Northern Ireland. The hero of the month is without contest the VW Tiguan: justifying its all-time record 4th place overall in the UK. The Tiguan is the outright best-seller in Northern Ireland, a nation where it first cracked the Top 10 in February 2017 and its previous high was #8 last March. It also ranks #3 in both Scotland and Wales, nations where it had never broken into the Top 10 before, and lastly 6th in England, beating its previous best of #8 hit just last July.

The MG ZS hits an all-time high 7th place in Wales, its second ever appearance in a UK nation Top 10.

The Toyota Aygo shoots up to a spectacular 2nd place in Scotland, the Ford Kuga is #2 in Wales (now also #2 YTD), #3 in Northern Ireland (now #2 YTD there) and #10 in England, with the VW Golf (#2 in England), Vauxhall Corsa (#2 in Northern Ireland) and Mercedes A-Class (#3 in England) snapping the remaining podium spots. Other great performers include the Ford Ecosport #4 in Wales (now #7 YTD there), the Peugeot 2008 scoring its first ever Top 10 in Wales (and any UK nation for that matter) at #5, the MG ZS up to a record-breaking #7 in Wales, its 2nd Top 10 appearance there and in any UK nation after ranking #10 last July, the Citroen C3 #7 in Northern Ireland and the VW T-Roc #8 in Scotland where VW places 4 nameplates in the October Top 9 (Golf, Tiguan, T-Roc and Polo).

New Caledonia (France) October 2018: Dacia Duster #1, Peugeot shines

The Dacia Duster is the best-selling vehicle in New Caledonia in October.

New Caledonia is a French Overseas archipelago located north-east of Australia, that just recently reaffirmed its will to belong to France with a new referendum. New car sales here gain 13.9% to 771 units in October, lifting the year-to-date tally to a slim 0.9% drop to 7.124. Keep in mind New Caledonian sales aren’t included in our monthly French updates that only represents Metropolitan France. This month Toyota (+1%) softens its growth but remains in the lead, whereas Peugeot surges 67% year-on-year and 5 spots on September to land in 2nd place. Citroen (+1%) rounds up the podium ahead of Dacia (+2%), Ford (-5%) and Renault (-2%). Subaru (+65%), Kia (+63%), Volkswagen (+61%) and Mitsubishi (+60%) post by far the largest gains in the Top 15. Model-wise, the Dacia Duster (+7%) takes the lead for only the third time this year after last March and July but is stuck at #3 YTD below the Ford Ranger (+82%) and Toyota Hilux (+5%) that follow it this month. The Peugeot 208 (+150%), 3008 (+125%), Subaru XV (+60%) and Toyota Yaris (+60%) also impress in the Top 10. The Citroen C3 Aircross (#10) and Kia Stonic (#30) top recent launches (<12 months).

UK October 2018: Land Rover hits ranking record at #7, Mercedes A-Class and VW Tiguan at highest ever

Land Rover soars 32% year-on-year to hit a record 7th place at home.

The UK market has recovered pretty swiftly from post-WLTP blues with October deliveries down just 2.9% year-on-year to 153.599 units, the lowest result for the month in 6 years, since October 2012 (151.252). As a result the year-to-date volume is now down 7.2% to 2.064.419 registrations, the lowest at this stage of the year since 2013 (1.952.238). This month, private sales are relatively solid at +1% to 69.231 and 45.1% share vs. 44.2% in October 2017, whereas fleet sales sink 5.2% to 79.611 and 51.8% share vs. 53.1% and business ales gain 10% to 4.757 and 3.1% vs. 2.7%. Year-to-date, all channels evolve almost identically: fleet deliveries drop 7.8% to 1.054.532 and 51.1% vs. 51.4%, private registrations fall 6.5% to 928.337 and 45% vs. 44.6% and business sales dive 7.1% to 81.550 and 4% vs. 3.9%. In terms of alimentation, diesel sales continue to freefall at -21.3% to 49.061 for the the month, that’s 31.9% share vs. 39.4% a year ago, while petrol sales gain 7.1% to 93.941 and 61.2% vs. 55.5% and Alternatively Fuelled Vehicles (AFV) soar 30.7% to 10.597 or 6.9% share vs. 5.1%. Year-to-date, diesel suffers even more at -30.7% to 656.273 and 31.8% share vs. 42.6%, petrol is up 9.2% to 1.286.540 and 62.3% share vs. 53% and AFV surge 21.8% to 121.606 or 5.9% vs. 4.5%.

In the brands ranking, Ford (-14%) hasn’t managed to slow down its fall but hits 11% share, in line with its YTD level of 10.8%. After imploding 55% in September, Volkswagen (-1%) is already recovered at 8.9% share vs. 8.3% so far this year whereas Audi (-53%) is still in hell. Mercedes (-3%) matches the market to round up the podium ahead of BMW (+2%), the only Top 5 carmaker in positive this month, and Vauxhall (-3%) down to a particularly weak 6.1% share. Land Rover surges 32% year-on-year and smashes its ranking record at home to reach #7, with its previous best being #9 hit in November 2015, March 2017 and November 2017. Toyota (+17%) is the only other carmaker in the Top 12 posting a double-digit gain. Further down, there are numerous great performers including MG (+304%), Mitsubishi (+100%), Jaguar (+82%), Mini (+63%), Aston Martin (+43%), Mazda (+43%), Volvo (+37%), Subaru (+36%), Jeep (+34%) and Renault (+27%).

The VW Tiguan breaks into the UK Top 5 for the first time this month, at #4.

Model-wise, the Ford Fiesta (-23%) hits the wall but stays #1, the VW Golf (-32%) is back in the 2nd place it holds year-to-date after spending a month outside the Top 10 (a very unusual occurrence). In third place, the Mercedes A-Class (-2%) repeats at its all-time record ranking thanks to stable sales but stays at #9 YTD. The VW Tiguan soars from outside the September Top 10 directly into 4th place, its first ever Top 5 finish in the UK and a brilliant feat given its only ever stints inside the monthly UK Top 10 were at #9 last June and July. The Mini (+47%) also posts an excellent score in 6th place overall and is now just 22 units below the VW Polo in the battle for the YTD 6th place. The BMW 3 Series leaps up to #9, the nameplate’s third Top 10 finish in the past 5 months. Finally, with the Corsa (+50%) kicked out of the Top 10, there are no Vauxhalls in the Top 10 for the 4th time in the past 13 months after October 2017November 2017 and August 2018. We have no record of no Vauxhall appearing in the monthly Top 10 prior to 2017. At least one Vauxhall has featured in the annual UK Top 10 without interruption since records began in 1965, and the lowest-ranking best-selling Vauxhall the Cavalier, #9 in 1979.

South Korea October 2018: EV pushes Hyundai Kona to record, market up 23.8%

The new EV variant pushes the Hyundai Kona to a new ranking record at home.

After tumbling down 17.2% in September, the South Korean new car market rebounds in October at +23.8% to 160.370 registrations, with the surge very uniform between local carmakers (+23.8%) and foreigners (+23.6%). Year-to-date, the market is now up 1.6% to 1.490.221 units, this time solely pulled into positive by foreign manufacturers up 14% to 218.168 and 14.6% share while locals drop 0.2% to 1.272.053 and 85.4%. Brand leader Hyundai (+19%) trails its home market but posts a very strong 38.1% share vs. 36.4% YTD, while sister brand Kia (+23%) hits 28.7% vs. 29.6% so far this year. Ssangyong (+36%) outpaces the market to 6.3% share, distancing Renault Samsung (+24%) back above GM Korea (+8%). Mercedes soars 40% year-on-year and four spots on September to #6 and #1 foreigner, back above Genesis (+196%) while BMW (-52%) implodes to 1.3% share vs. 3% YTD. Lexus (+119%) signs the largest year-on-year gain in the Top 15, surging 11 ranks on last month to #9 while Toyota (+21%) is also back inside the Top 10. Porsche (+339%), Cadillac (+86%), Mini (+79%), Citroen (+64%), Peugeot (+45%), Jeep (+35%) and Ford (+34%) shine.

The Renault Samsung Master has landed in South Korea.

The Hyundai Santa Fe (+153%) has now been the best-seller at home for 8 straight months but remains #2 year-to-date (+108%) below the Hyundai Grandeur (-18%) due to two weak months of the previous generation at the start of the year. The Hyundai Porter (+20%) climbs up to 2nd place overall, the Kia Carnival (+62%) and Hyundai Kona (+41%) post the largest improvements in the Top 10 – with the latter breaking its ranking record at #7 (previous best #9 in September 2017) thanks to the new electric variant. Outside the Top 10, the Hyundai Veloster (+1838%), Kia K9 (+1571%), Ssangyong Korando Sports (+139%), Kia Ray (+85%), Chevrolet Trax (+62%), Hyundai Grand Starex (+60%), Kia K3 (+59%), Kia K5 (+54%) and Samsung QM6 (+52%) are among the best performers. This month we welcome the Renault Samsung Master at #48.

Argentina October 2018: Toyota Hilux & Etios lead, Fiat Cronos on podium

The freefalling of the Argentinean new vehicle market continues to accelerate at -36.5% in October at 48.330 registrations after September down 33.6%August down 22.8%July down 14.4% and June down 9.4%. The year-to-date tally is now down 5.2% to 728.306. Best-selling brand this month, Toyota (+2%) is the only Top 10 carmaker in positive alongside Jeep (+18%) at #10. Chevrolet (-55%), Fiat (-48%), Citroen (-47%), Ford (-46%), Volkswagen (-45%) and Peugeot (-43%) fall even faster than the market while Nissan (-14%) and Renault (-16%) resist well. Further down, Dongfeng (+200%), Smart (+52%), DS (+33%) and Subaru (+23%) are among the rare marques in positive. Changan (#46) is the 6th Chinese carmaker to launch in Argentina this year after BAIC, Great Wall, Haval, JAC and Shineray – however all remain below 0.2% share so far.

The Toyota Hilux (-6%) and Etios (-25%) hold onto the Top 2 positions, swapping their roles YTD to reflect that order also. The Fiat Cronos leaps up 9 spots on September to both break into the Top 10 and the podium at #3, 18 sales above the Renault Kwid, another recent launch (<12 months). The Toyota Corolla (+6%) is the only Top 10 nameplate in positive whereas the VW Gol (-67%), Chevrolet Onix (-49%) and Peugeot 208 (-39%) all implode. The Toyota Yaris (+395%) and VW Polo (+251%) both shine.
