The Taiwanese new car market edges down -1.3% year-on-year in October to 35.048 registrations, an evolution we also find with the year-to-date volumes at 357.132. Brand leader Toyota falls slightly faster than the market at -3% to 22.3% share vs. 23.7% so far in 2018. Volkswagen (+26%), Lexus (+21%), Mercedes (+13%) and Mitsubishi/CMC (+10%) all manage to brave the adverse conditions by posting double-digit gains in the Top 10. Mazda (+6%) also shines whereas BMW (-24%), Ford (-13%), Honda (-9%) and Nissan/Infiniti (-8%) all struggle. Model-wise, the Toyota Corolla (-38%) is once again strongly impacted by the arrival of the Auris (aka Corolla hatch) even though the latter is down 6 spots on its inaugural month to #21, with the Toyota RAV4 (-9%) and CMC Veryca (+46%) rounding up the podium. The Toyota C-HR (+173%), Lexus ES (+166%), VW Tiguan (+166%), Mercedes GLC (+55%), Nissan Sentra (+51%), Toyota Vios (+34%), Yaris (+30%) and Mazda CX-5 (+27%) also impress near the top.

New car sales in Taiwan reduce their fall from a ghastly -28.8% in August due to national holidays falling at a different time this year to – 1.8% in September at 30.799 units, leading to a year-to-date volume down 1.1% to 322.784. Brand leader Toyota (-8%) falls faster than the market to 19.7% share vs. 23.8% so far this year with Honda (-4%) also weak but Mitsubishi (+12%) and Nissan (+10%) post strong results in the Top 4. Lexus (+68%) and Volkswagen (+47%) are by far the most dynamic Top 10 brands this month with BMW (-24%) and Mazda (-20%) hit hard and Luxgen (-64%) in dire straits again. The Taiwanese models ranking may be on the verge of a major shakeup as the Toyota Corolla (-23%) now has to deal with the arrival of a new hatchback variant baptised Auris landing directly at #15 with 1.6% share this month. It’s ironic that Toyota Taiwan has chosen to name this vehicle Auris in complete opposition to Europe where that exact nameplate was discontinued after 12 years in favour of a return to “Corolla”. The CMC Veryca (+36%) leaps up to an outstanding 2nd place, distancing an SUV pack composed of the Honda CR-V (-1%), Toyota RAV4 (-23%) and Honda HR-V (-21%). Excellent scores for the Mercedes GLC (+50%) up to #8, Nissan X-Trail (+65%), VW Tiguan (+260%) and Lexus NX (+211%).

Due to the national holidays falling at a different time of the month this year, the Taiwanese new car market plunges 28.8% year-on-year in August to just 26.035 registrations, pulling the year-to-date volume down 1.1% to 291.285 units. Brand leader Toyota (-48%) falls much faster than the market, losing almost half its sales compared to August 2017 and falling to 20.5% share vs. 24.2% so far this year. Mitsubishi/CMC (-20%) and Mercedes (-20%) both resist at #2 and #4 respectively but it’s Mazda (+19%) and Volkswagen (+42%) that stun by lodging double-digit year-on-year gains. Lexus (-38%), Honda (-38%) and Nissan/Infiniti (-46%) sink. Model-wise, the Toyota Corolla (-61%) remains the best-seller but freefalls, distancing the Toyota RAV4 (-43%), CMC Veryca (-25%) and Toyota Yaris (-33%). The Mazda CX-5 leaps up 68% to 5th place, the Mitsubishi Delica is up 1% to #7 and the VW Tiguan is up 381% to #13. Notice also the Porsche Cayenne up 105% to slice its July ranking in two at #30.

The Taiwanese new car market slides down 5.5% year-on-year in June to 37.889 registrations, but the year-to-date tally remains in the black at +2.6% to 222.194 units. Only 3 of the Top 10 best-selling manufacturers manage a year-on-year gain in June, with Honda (+50%) being by far the most impressive and Lexus (+10%) and Volkswagen (+2%) following at a distance. Both market leaders Toyota and Mitsubishi/CMC drop a hefty 13%, BMW is down 14% and Ford implodes an estimated 36%. Mercedes (-2%), Mazda (-5%) and Nissan/Infiniti (-6%) see more measured drops. After losing the top spot for the first time since September 2013 last month, the Toyota Corolla reclaims its place under the Taiwanese sun in June despite deliveries hit a steep 37%. Victorious in May, the Honda CR-V (+489%) remains strong in 2nd place while Toyota monopolises the remainder of the Top 5 like last month with the RAV4 (-13%), Sienta (-10%) and Yaris (+2%). Notice also the Toyota C-HR up 269% to #15, the Mazda CX-3 up 23% to #20 and the Skoda Karoq landing directly at #65.

New car sales in Taiwan edge up 1% year-on-year in May to 35.686 units, meaning the year-to-date volume is up 4.1% to  184.305. There are some pretty momentous shifts at play in the market this month: both brand leader Toyota (-16%) and Nissan (-14%) are hit hard whereas Honda soars 42% to 10.3% share vs. 9.1% so far in 2018. Mercedes (+22%) and Lexus (+64%) also impress among luxury carmakers just as Ford (-36%) freefalls. Mitsubishi/CMC (+5%), Mazda (-2%), Volkswagen (-3%) and BMW (-9%) post more muted results in the Top 10. But the big surprise comes in the models ranking where the Toyota Corolla (-45%) is toppled from its throne for the first time in almost 5 years (since September 2013 when the Nissan Tiida ranked 1st). The best-seller this month is the Honda CR-V thanks to deliveries up 4-fold (+319%) on the previous generation a year ago. The Sienta (+33%), RAV4 (-24%) and Yaris (+20%) make it 4 Toyotas in the Top 5. Up 38% to #8, the Mercedes C-Class reaches its highest ranking since we started following Taiwan monthly in November 2010 and only its second Top 10 finish after August 2014 (#10).

Toyota unsurprisingly remains the most popular carmaker here but freefalls 18% to 21.2% share vs. 24.1% so far this year. Mitsubishi/CMC evolves like the market at +3% to 12% share in 2nd place, while Honda soars 29% to remains at #3 and now also ranks at that level YTD, overtaking Nissan/Infiniti (-11% this month). Lexus is by far the best performer in market this month wth sales up a stunning 127% on March 20178 to rank #7 with 5.1% share. Mazda (+36%) and Mercedes (+18%) also shine. Model-wise, the Toyota Corolla (-23%) and RAV4 (-28%) are on top like YTD and despite very steep drops, while the CMC Veryca is up 3 spots on February and 3% year-on-year in third place. The Honda CR-V (+103%) continues to evolve well above the previous generation a year ago, while the Toyota Sienta (+23%) rounds up the Top 5. But it’s the Lexus NX (+579%) that takes all the honours this month, up 12 spots on last month to reach an all-time record 7th place, its 2nd ever incursion into the Taiwanese monthly Top 10 after the #10 it hit back in February 2015.

After a particularly weak January result, Mazda rallies back up 51% to 7.3% share in 5th place, distancing Mercedes (+7%), local carmaker Luxgen (+30%), Ford (-12%), Volkswagen (+28%) and BMW (-15%).
