Samoa corresponds to the western part of the Samoan Islands, the Eastern part being American Samoa. It is home to 192.342 inhabitants, with the two main islands being Upolu hosting the capital city Apia and the Faleolo International Airport, and Savai’i, one of the biggest islands in Polynesia.

New car sales in Samoa are up 4.6% year-on-year in 2017 to 389 units and are once again dominated by Toyota but the Japanese carmaker drop 2% to 38.6% share vs. 41.1% a year ago whereas Ford (+4%) and most strikingly Hyundai (+28%) both gain volume on 2016. These three manufacturers account for 98.2% of the Samoan market, with Chevrolet and Mitsubishi sharing the rest. The Ford Ranger should be the best-seller in Samoa in 2017, followed by the Toyota Hilux and Hiace.

The Samoan new car market is down 7% year-on-year in 2015 to 258 registrations. Toyota dominates the Samoan market head and shoulders with over 53% share, followed by Ford at 27.5% and Hyundai at 16.7%. The Hilux is Toyota’s best-seller followed by the Hiace but both nameplates could potentially be challenged by the new Ford Ranger which should account for the majority of Ford sales in the archipelago.

The Toyota Hilux is the best-selling vehicle in Samoa in 2014.

Samoa, formerly known as Western Samoa, became independent from New Zealand in 1962. It composes the western part of the Samoan Islands, the Eastern part being American Samoa. According to Wikipedia, the two main islands of Samoa are Upolu where the capital city Apia and the Faleolo International Airport are located, and Savai’i, one of the biggest islands in Polynesia. The Samoan Islands were was called “Navigator Islands” by European explorers before the 20th century because of the Samoans’ seafaring skills. Samoa is home to 194.320 inhabitants and 278 new light vehicles found a buyer here in 2014.

Toyota dominates the Samoan market with an iron first and over 50% share, above Ford (25.9%) and Hyundai (19.1%). The Hilux is the best-selling nameplate in the archipelago followed closely by the Hiace. Ford is currently running a marketing campaign in Samoa offering 500 tala (US$200) if customers test drive a Ford Ranger and still decide to go with the ‘other guy’ (namely the Toyota Hilux).
