Today we can share with you monthly data for Puerto Rico, another market dominated by Japanese manufacturer Toyota, which holds the first four spots in January as it did over the Full Year 2016 with the Yaris, Tacoma, Corolla and RAV4 in the lead. The main trends to note this month in Puerto Rico are the particular strength of the SUV and pick-up segments. This month in Puerto Rico there are five SUVs in the Top 10: below the RAV4 at #4 (-1 spot on FY16) we find the Hyundai Tucson at #5, the Nissan Rogue at #6 (+6), Kia Soul at #7 (+4) and Toyota Highlander at #10 (+6%). But the most notable move is the Toyota Tacoma gaining two spots on its FY16 ranking to an overall 2nd place. A Tacoma win by the end of the year would make Puerto Rico the second U.S. state/territory to crown this nameplate alongside Hawaii.

Not a good year for new light vehicle sales in Puerto Rico: down a harsh 12% year-on-year to just 90,338 registrations. Being an unincorporated state of the United States, Puerto Rican car sales are not accounted for in the monthly and annual US updates. The particularity of this market is the weakness of American carmakers and the strength of Asian manufacturers. Case in point: Toyota keeps the lead of the brands ranking, even improving its market share to a huge 26.7% thanks to sales down ‘just’ 6% to 24,093 units. Nissan (-15%), Hyundai (-13%) and Kia (-18%) follow while the #1 US carmaker, Chrysler, ranks 5th with 9.2% share. Mitsubishi (+6%) and Mazda (+17%) are the only two manufacturers in the Top 10 to increase their sales vs. 2013.

Mitsubishi Mirage

The Toyota Corolla is the best-selling nameplate here for the 2nd year running, jumping to 9.4% market share thanks to sales up 1% to 8,490. In 2nd place, the Toyota Yaris does even better, up 7% to 6.9% but the best performer on the podium (and in the Top 40) is the Mitsubishi Mirage, up 120% to #3 and 4.9% share for its first full year in market. The Jeep Wrangler consolidates its position as best-selling Yankee, up 11% to #7 and one of only 3 US nameplates in the Top 20 alongside the Ford Fiesta (#16) and Jeep Grand Cherokee (#17). Other great performers include the Nissan Rogue (+67%) and Toyota Highlander (+80%).

No sign of improvement for new car sales in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands (USVI) in June: down 16% on June 2013 to 7,916 registrations, which is the the harshest year-on-year decline since BSCB started following Puerto Rico sales monthly (September 2012). In April, only 6,545 new light vehicles were sold in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands (USVI), down 14.5% on April 2013. It is the sharpest year-on-year decline since BSCB started following Puerto Rico sales monthly (September 2012) and the weakest April result since 2010 (6,174). GUIA President José Ordeix said the local auto industry continues to show a worrisome sustained sales contraction, adding that 2014 could be as low as 2011 when the industry sold 93,687 units. The local auto industry posted a sustained slide in sales in December, January and February before rebounding 6% in March. Bad weather and concerns over the island’s economy were to blame for buyers staying away from auto dealers during the first months of the year. Year-to-date sales as of April amounted to 30,306 units, a 6% decrease on 2013.

…as does Mitsubishi at +57%

Most major automotive brands were hit, including Smart (-40%), Mini (-39%), Mercedes (-26%), Volkswagen (-26%), Ford (-25%), Acura (-24%), Toyota (-21%), Honda (-19%), Lexus (-18%), Nissan (-17%), Land Rover (-17%), Kia (-16%), Audi (-16%), Chrysler (-13%), Hyundai (-12%) and General Motors (-10%). Carmakers bucking the trend were Mazda (+64%) and Mitsubishi (+57%). In the models ranking, the Top 4 best-sellers are identical to the year-to-date ranking with the Toyota Corolla, Yaris, Mitsubishi Mirage and Hyundai Accent leading the way. The Toyota RAV4 is solid at #5, the Mitsubishi Lancer climbs back to #12 vs. #21 year-to-date but #7 in 2013 and the Ford F-Series is up to #14.
