For only the second time ever on BSCB and thanks to  I can share with you official information on the most popular brands and models in Lesotho, an enclaved landlocked country surrounded by South Africa and home to two million inhabitants, 40% of which live below the international poverty line of US$1 a day. Note the rankings we share only include the models imported from South Africa and reported to NAAMSA but this is almost 100% of new car sales in Lesotho. This year, Mercedes-Benz have been omitted from this study due to their irregular sales reporting.

The Toyota Etios is once again the best-selling passenger car in Lesotho.

Like in 2014, the Toyota Hilux is the best-selling light vehicle in Lesotho by far with 334 deliveries, and this despite sales down 13%. The Ford Ranger (+76%) snaps the 2nd spot away from the Toyota Etios (-44%) while the Toyota Fortuner jumps 3 spots to #5. The Top 10 passenger cars are only Toyotas (6) and Fords (4) with the Figo up to #6 and the Ecosport, Fiesta and Kuga making their first appearance. Brand-wise, Toyota and Ford stay on top, followed by Chevrolet (+2), Nissan (+3) and Volkswagen (+3) while Renault, Volvo and Mazda break into the Top 10 and Jeep is down 5 spots.

Now updated with sales figures for the Top 5 passenger cars and light vehicles.

For the first time on BSCB and thanks to  I can share with you official information on the best-selling brands and models in Lesotho. Translating into “the land of the people who speak Sesotho” and just over 30.000 km2 in size, Lesotho is an enclaved landlocked country completely surrounded by South Africa and home to just over two million inhabitants, 40% of which live below the international poverty line of US$1.25 a day. Rankings by brand, passenger car models and overall light vehicles are available and paint a very different picture from the South African market that surrounds it. Note these rankings only include the models reported to NAAMSA, however almost 100% of new vehicles sold in Lesotho are imported from South Africa and thus reported to NAAMSA so this is an almost exact depiction of the Masotho market for 2014.

The Mercedes E-Class is the 3rd best-selling passenger car in Lesotho.

Toyota is ultra-dominant in Lesotho, placing seven nameplates within the Top 10 best-selling light vehicles in the country, including the Hilux (#1) selling almost 400 units, Etios (#2 and best-selling passenger car) with 85 deliveries and Corolla (#3) at just above 50 sales. Mercedes ranks at an astounding third place overall, with the E-Class the third best-selling passenger car and 7th best-selling light vehicle overall. American manufacturers also do surprisingly well in Lesotho: Jeep is #4 and places both the Wrangler and Grand Cherokee inside the Top 10 passenger cars, while Dodge ranks #9 and Chrysler #10.

Lesotho/Swaziland: Toyota Hilux and VW Polo Vivo should lead

VW Polo Vivo

We welcome countries #158 and #159 on BestSellingCarsBlog: Lesotho and Swaziland.

I could not find any official data for these two countries landlocked by South Africa. In this context, the best-selling models there are most likely very similar and follow the same evolution as the ones in South Africa, namely the Toyota Hilux, VW Polo Vivo, Toyota Corolla and VW Polo.

For this reason I have decided to link the Lesotho and Swaziland posts directly to the South Africa category.

You can see the monthly South African best-selling models here.

If you know any more about car sales in Lesotho and Swaziland please make sure to get in touch!
