Latin America First Half 2018: Discover the Top 50 brands and models

The Chevrolet Onix is the best-selling vehicle in the region for the third year running.

Today we can share with you the most popular brands and models in Latin America over the First Half of 2018 thanks to our partnership with JATO Dynamics. This dataset includes Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Peru and Puerto Rico and over the region, total new vehicle sales gain 7% year-on-year to 2.83 million units. Renault-Nissan tops the groups ranking with 18% share above General Motors (15%), VW Group (13%), FCA (11%), Hyundai-Kia (9.7%), Toyota (9%) and Ford (7.9%). Chevrolet (+0.9%) is the most popular brand but posts a meagre uplift in contrast with Volkswagen (+8.2%) whereas Nissan (-4.1%) straggles. Renault (+18.2%), Kia (+14.4%), Fiat (+9.2%) and Toyota (+7.8%) all score very satisfying upticks the Top 10. Below, Jeep (+32.6%), Suzuki (+22%), BMW (+21.1%) and Mitsubishi (+11.6%) male themselves noticed.

Chery is the most popular among the 12 Chinese carmakers present in the Top 50.

There are 12 Chinese manufacturers in the Latin American Top 50 brands so far in 2018, including four inside the Top 30, one more than a year ago. The interesting fact for this year is that absolutely all 12 of them post double-digit gains over the period. Chery (+37.2%) dominates at #22 overall, distancing JAC (+44.9%,) Great Wall (+35.6%) and Changan (+81.5%). Further down, Maxus (+311.9%), BAIC (+89.3%), Dongfeng (+87.1%) and DFSK (+55.1%) are the most dynamic with Lifan (+19.4%) and FAW (+19.7%) the only two brands missing out on a 20% year-on-year surge, but just.

The Ford Ka/Figo steps up to 2nd place overall so far in 2018.

The best-selling vehicle in the region for the third year in a row is the Chevrolet Onix (+10%) still growing significantly, while the Ford Ka/Figo (+12%) steps up to 2nd place and the Nissan Versa (+6%) climbing onto the podium. The Toyota Hilux (+9%) also progresses, up two ranks on last year to #4, all the aforementioned nameplates benefiting from the weakness of the VW Gol (-18%) down to #5. Thanks to the arrival of the Beat, the tandem Chevrolet Spark/Beat (+189%) leaps up to #7, the Chevrolet Prisma (+11%) is up to #8 and the Renault Kwid, whose availability is now spreading across the region, shoots up from #74 over the Full Year 2017 to #13. The Chevrolet Onix is the best-selling nameplate in Latin America for the first time.

Today we can share with you for the first time on BSCB the 100 most popular models in the whole of Latin America for the first half of 2016, thanks to Autodato. The 22 markets forming the region add up to 2.6 million registrations, a 7.3% year-on-year decline mainly due to the struggle of the Brazilian market over the period (-25%). Mexico on the other hand, the second blockbuster market in the region, is up 18.5%, while Argentina is up 10%, Uruguay down 9% and Venezuela down 59%.

No facelift effect: the VW Gol is dethroned in Latin America… 

The Top 100 ranking sees a momentous shift atop the charts. Its tremendous success in Brazil, the largest market in the region, is now enough for the Chevrolet Onix to become most popular nameplate in the whole of Latin America for the very first time with 76.374 units vs. 62.346 (+22.5%) a year ago. This means the end of a decades-long reign for the VW Gol, down 11.8% to 63.925 units. The Toyota Hilux, #1 in Argentina, ranks third with 56.953 sales.

The Hyundai HB20 – only available in Brazil, Nissan Versa, Toyota Corolla and Ford Ka are also extremely popular in the region, while the Fiat Palio, once threatening the VW Gol for supremacy, has fallen down to #7. The Honda HR-V is the best-selling SUV in the region at #8, a comfortable 13.000 units above the Renault Duster (#18), followed by the Ford Ecosport (#25), Jeep Renegade (#26), Kia Sportage (#36) and Hyundai Tucson (#38).

The Fiat Mobi is already inside the Latin American Top 100. 

Below the Hilux, the best-selling pickups in Latin America are the Fiat Strada (#15), Nissan Largo (#19), VW Saveiro (#24), Ford Ranger (#30), Chevrolet S10 (#35) and VW Amarok (#41). The Ford F-Series, supreme leader in North America, only ranks 71st just above the Chevrolet Silverado in 72nd place. Among recent launches, the Fiat Toro (#46), Renault Oroch (#70) and Fiat Mobi (#84) make their appearance in the Top 100.
