According to OICA, the Costa Rican new passenger car market is down 9.9% year-on-year in 2017 to 43.518 registrations. We have access to the Top 10 brands and models of passenger cars (pickups excluded) for the first 10 months of the year. Toyota leads the way in the brands ranking with over 5.000 sales ahead of Hyundai above 3.600 and Nissan just under 2.800. All other manufacturers sell less than 2.000 units in Costa Rica over the period, including Honda, Mitsubishi, Suzuki, Kia and Mazda. Chevrolet and BMW are the only non-Asian marques in the Top 10. Model-wise, the Hyundai Accent snaps the pole position but only has a 9-unit advantage over the #2, the Honda Civic, while the Toyota Yaris is 75 sales below. The Toyota Corolla is the only other nameplate to amount to over 1.000 sales over the period. Notice also the Mitsubishi Montero, Hyundai Santa Fe and Nissan Pathfinder in the Top 10.

Costa Rica Full Year 2015: Toyota continues to dominate

The new Toyota Hilux arrives in Costa Rica this year.

According to the Dirección General de Aduanas publicadas and local publication, 51.249 new vehicles were imported into Costa Rica in 2015, a whopping 24% increase on the 2014 figure. Of them, 80% are light vehicles and 20% medium and heavy trucks. The largest distributor in the country continues to be Purdy Motor with 10.925 new sales in 2015, including 8.521 branded Toyota, the most popular marque in the country with 16.6% market share. The Toyota Hilux should once again top the models sales charts in Costa Rica in 2015. Sources: DGA,, AIVEMA.

Costa Rica Full Year 2014: Toyota market leader

The Toyota Hilux should top sales in Costa Rica.

After dropping 22% in 2012 and 3% in 2013, the Costa Rican car market is on the mend in 2014 with sales of new and used vehicles up 6% over the first 9 months of the year. Local association AIVEMA reports 27.161 sales over the period vs. 25.609 in 2013. However, the total market – new and used imports registered for the first time in the country – stands at 86.764 sales in 9 months, a 14% improvement over the 75.910 units sold in the same period in 2013. Confused? I am too. But wait there’s more. Nowadays in Costa Rica there are more new cars sold than used ones, however the new cars imported into the country a falling: from 22.439 over the first 8 months of 2012, to 19,485 in 2013 and 18.153 in 2014. One thing is certain, Toyota is market leader with 19.1% market share in 2014, and the logic would dictate that the Hilux is the best-seller here. Costa Rica 2011: Daihatsu BeGo Terios possible leader

Daihatsu BeGo Terios in Costa Rica

Now it’s the turn of Costa Rica to be under the spotlight! The Costa Rican car market differs from its neighbours in the fact that Toyota isn’t completely owning the place. Favoured by end consumers and rental car companies alike, the Daihatsu Terios (called BeGo Terios in Costa Rica) could very well be on top of the sales ranking.

The two other very successful models in Costa Rica are the Suzuki Grand Vitara and the Honda Civic. Other cars worth mentioning are the Toyota Hilux, Corolla and Yaris and the Hyundai Accent which, judging by the amount of previous gen Accents in the streets, may have been best-seller in the past.
