Italy June 2019: Fiat falls to lowest ever share (13.5%), Dacia surges, Jeep Renegade up to record #2

The Jeep Renegade is up to #2 in Italy in June.

The Italian new car market recedes year-on-year for the 9th time in the past 11 months in June at -2.2% to 172.475 units. This despite very dynamic rental sales up 12.6% to 45.284 and 26.3% share vs. 22.8% a year ago. Short-term rentals soar 35.6% to 14.636, long-term or leases are up 5.7% to 26.945 Private sales drop -4.7% to 93.243 and 54.1% share vs. 55.4%, while it’s company sales that suffer the most at -11.5% to 33.948 and 19.7% share vs. 21.8%. Petrol sales soar 27.1% to 74.012, eclipsing diesel sales down -22.6% to 72.088, with GPL up 2.7% to 11.931, Hybrids up 18.3% to 9.473 and EVs up 224.7% to 1.445.

After breathing again somewhat over the past two months with its first single-digit declines in over a year, Fiat (-17%) is back to absolute hell with a 14th double-digit fall in the past 16 months, falling to an impossibly low 13.5% market share. Sadly, this is a ghastly 1.3 percentage point below its previous all-time lowest share at home hit last January (14.8%). That puts Volkswagen (+0.4%) a mere 4 percentage points below at 9.4%, with Renault (-1%) resisting well to round up the podium at 7.7%. Once again Dacia (+49.3%) evolves on a different planet with by far the largest year-on-year gain in the Top 10 and the only double-digit one. Jeep (+9.2%), Citroen (+7.7%) and Toyota (+2.1%) also post market-defying lifts. Further down, notice Tesla (+528%), Lexus (+211.6%), DR Motor (+160.3%), Mitsubishi (+94.1%), Lamborghini (+53.6%), Mazda (+31.4%), Suzuki (+53.4%), Seat (+12.8%), Mahindra (+12.5%) all make waves.

The Fiat Panda (+18.5%) is undeterred in pole position and continues to align market-defying double-digit gains (6 in the past 8 months), seconded this month by the Jeep Renegade (+30.8%) soaring 4 spots on May to #2 overall, a new ranking record for the 4×4 eclipsing its previous best of #3 hit in May and December 2018. The Renault Clio (-4.7%) rounds up the podium, the only nameplate in negative in the Top 10! The Dacia Duster (+96.4%) climbs back inside the Top 5 for the third time in the past 4 months (and ever), the VW T-Roc (+65.6%) signs a 6th straight Top 10 finish and the Opel Karl (+121.3%) breaks into the Italian Top 10 for the first time, eclipsing its previous ranking record (#14) established last September. The Dacia Sandero (+30.5%) and Renault Captur (+21.8%) are also in outstanding shape in the remainder of the Top 10 and the VW T-Cross breaks into the Top 20 for its third month in market.
