New car sales in Luxembourg edge up 0.07% or just 36 units in 2018 to 52.811 registrations. Volkswagen (+3%) remains by far the most popular carmaker in the country, improving its share to 12.3% and distancing BMW (+0.2%) and Mercedes (+3.4%) like in 2017. Despite a steep fall, Renault (-7.4%) overtakes Audi (-21.7%) to rank #4 this year, with Peugeot (+5.3%), Skoda (+5.2%) and Ford (+3.4%) all positing solid gains below but Volvo (+33.7%) outpaces them all to lodge the largest year-on-year gain – and the only double-digit one – in the Top 20, even breaking into the Top 10 at #9. Further down, Jeep (+50.6%), Jaguar (+35.3%), Subaru (+27.6%), Honda (+22.5%), Lamborghini (+20%), DS (+19.6%), Ferrari (+18.8%) and Kia (+13.5%) are among the most dynamic among smaller brands.

Luxembourg is the first European market to welcome Chinese-owned Borgward.

Besides the return of Alpine (#47), Luxembourg is the theatre of a significant event in 2018: it is the first market in Europe where Borgward (#48), now under Chinese management, is relaunched after 57 years, albeit very discreetly with just 11 units sold. Model-wise, the VW Golf (+3%) is #1 for the 8th year running but the true heroes this year are the Mercedes GLC (+8.2%) and A-Class (+60.6%) each nabbing the monthly top spot for two consecutive months: the GLC in August and September and the A-Class in October and November. The VW Polo (+19.2%) is up 3 spots on 2017 to #5 but the VW Tiguan (-29.1%), BMW X1 (-28.3%), Audi A3 (-27.1%) and Renault Clio (-27%) all endure ghastly drops. The BMW X3 (+281.1%) and Peugeot 3008 (+5.9%) also break into the Top 10.
