Consult seven years worth of Monaco Historical Data here

Exclusive to BSCB, after exploring in detail brands data for Monaco, we can now share with you the best-selling models in the Principality for the first time since 2015 after a one-year hiatus, and as such the data below the jump includes complete Full Year 2016 figures. You won’t find this data anywhere else. The Monaco models ranking is always a fascinating exploration into the tastes of a nation from which 30% of its inhabitants are millionaires. For the third consecutive year, the two preferred nameplates in the Principalty have remained unchanged: a testimony to the lack of parking space in the city-country, the Smart Fortwo is once again the default choice here with a 4.3% market share. More attuned to the outlandish wealth of its inhabitants, the Porsche Macan renews its world-best second place overall with an astounding 3.5% share. The Macan could even potentially have a try at the 2018 pole position as it gains 2% this year vs. -5% for the Fortwo.

The Mini hatchback is up 16% year-on-year but remains in third place in a podium unchanged on 2016. Confirming a taste for premium minis, the Fiat 500 surges 75% and two spots on last year to #4 overall, while the Audi A1 is up 16% but down one rank to #5. The Audi Q2 ends its first full year of sales in 6th place, followed by the Mercedes A-Class (+122%).

The Bentley Continental soars 71% to break into Monaco’s Top 10 at #8.

Stepping up one notch on the luxury scale, the Range Rover Sport (+9%) remains in 8th place ahead of the Bentley Continental GT/GTC soaring 71% and 4 ranks to a world-best 9th place. The Audi A3 (-12%) completes the Top 10. Other unique features of this year’s models ranking in Monaco include the Porsche 911 at #11, the Range Rover Evoque at #17, the Porsche Cayenne at #19, the Range Rover at #22, the Bentley Flying Spur at #24, the Ferrari GTC4Lusso at #31, the Ferrari 488 at #32 and the Maserati Levante at #33.

The Ferrari GTC4Lusso misses the Monaco Top 30 for just one sale in 2017.

Although the Principality is nestled within France, only 21.4% have the Monegasque nationality and 28.4% are French. The remaining 50.2% are foreigners: notably 18.7% Italian (perhaps explaining the nation’s taste for Ferraris), 7.5% British, 2.5% German and 2.5% Swiss. One particularity of the nation is that there are no Renault, Peugeot nor Citroen dealerships in Monaco: if you absoluitely have to lower yourselves to mimic the tastes of the masses, you will need to trek to France, purchase your frail car there, then register it in the Principality. As such, don’t expect to find any French car in the Top 30 this year, as it has been the case since 2015, with the Renault Clio and Peugeot 308 the best of a very weak lot at #35 and #36 ahead of the Peugeot 208 (#40), Peugeot 3008 (#55) and Citroen C4 Picasso (#77). You have read right, both the Ferrari GTC4Lusso and 488 outsell all French nameplates in Monaco in 2017.
