Gulf Cooperation Council Full Year 2017: Toyota Hilux holds onto lead

The Toyota Hilux is the best-selling vehicle in the region, although #1 in no market.

The Gulf Cooperation Council is an economic union including Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. After a harsh 21% drop in 2016, the region’s new car sales continue to freefall in 2017 at -19% to 1.143.075 units – whereas it hit 1.8 million in 2015. Toyota continues to dominate sales in the region, following the market at -19% to see its share unchanged at 33.7%. #2 Hyundai on the other hand implodes 34% and loses almost three percentage points of market share, going from 14.9% to 12%. In third place like in 2016, Nissan improves to 11.6% thanks to a moderate 11% drops while below, Kia (-15%), Chevrolet (-10%) Mitsubishi (-12%) and Lexus (-10%) all improve their shares also. But the best performer in the Top 10 is without contest Renault actually managing a year-on-year gain of 23% to lift three spots to #10. Ram (+61%), Aston Martin (+40%), Dodge (+24%), Acura (+12%), Citroen (+12%), Jeep (+9%) and Volvo (+8%) also shine just as Genesis lands directly at #29.

The Toyota Land Cruiser wins 3 markets and ends 2017 in 2nd place overall.

In the models ranking, despite dropping a steep 30% and topping no market in the region the Toyota Hilux is the best-seller in the GCC like in 2016 with 5.4% share. Its consistency at the highest level is rewarded, with the Hilux ranking #2 in Saudi Arabia and Oman and #3 in the United Arab Emirates and Qatar. The Toyota Land Cruiser (-7%) gains one spot on 2016 to land at an excellent 2nd place overall with 4.8% share. It is the only nameplate to top more than one country in the region, crowned in BahrainOman and Qatar and ranking #2 in the UAE. The Toyota Camry edges down 0.2% and is up two spots to #3 with 4.8% share also, boosted by its win in the largest market in the region: Saudi Arabia. It also ranks #3 in Kuwait.

The Toyota Prado wins Kuwait and ranks 6th overall in the GCC.

The Nissan Patrol surges 16% and 5 ranks on last year to point in 4th place, helped by a pole position in the UAE, a 2nd place in Qatar and a 3rd spot in Oman. The Toyota Corolla tumbles down 30% at #5 and only manages one podium finish (in Bahrain) while the Toyota Prado is up one spot to #6, winning in Kuwait and ranking #2 in Bahrain. Three Hyundais follow (Accent, Elantra and Sonata) and the Toyota Yaris rounds up the Top 10. The two most spectacular gainers in the Top 50 are the Renault Koleos (#28) and Talisman (#34) almost exclusively thanks to their performance in Saudi Arabia. The Nissan Kicks is the most popular all-new launch for 2017 at #61, followed at a distance by the Genesis G80 (#111), Mazda CX-3 (#118) and MG 360 (#140).
