The Mexican new light vehicle market has now well and truly entered a period of recession with November marking the 7th month of decline out of the past eight at -8.5% to 141.150 units and leading to a year-to-date volume down 2.8% to 1.371.713. Once again the top four best-selling carmakers fall faster than the market with Nissan (-13%), Chevrolet (-22%), Volkswagen (-10%) and Toyota (-12%) topping the charts. And once again the heroes of the month are the recently-launched sister Korean brands. Kia soars 43% to 7.815 sales and 5.5% share, breaking its all-time volume record for the 9th time in the past 12 months. Meanwhile Hyundai surges 42% to 5.011 units and 3.5% share, the carmaker’s first month above 5.000 sales and the 7th time in the past 12 months it breaks its volume record. Other great performers include Suzuki (+51%), Lamborghini (+50%), Mercedes (+39%), Subaru (+37%), Land Rover (+31%), Isuzu (+26%), Peugeot (+26%), Audi (+23%), Fiat (+17%), Volvo (+12%) and Ferrari (+11%).
The Chevrolet Beat steps up to 2nd place overall for the first time.
Model-wise, the Nissan Versa goes against the grain with a 17% year-on-year gain to 7.8% share, a new record for the nameplate which also posts its second best-ever monthly volume at 11.062 units. In second place, the Chevrolet Beat takes its blockbuster success to the next level with new ranking, volume and share records, and is up to #9 year-to-date. The Nissan Pickup drops 22% to a distant #3 but remains at #2 year-to-date. The Chevrolet Aveo (-51%), VW Jetta (-50%), Nissan March (-19%) and VW Vento (-16%) all struggle inside the Top 10 whereas the Kia Rio (+229%) and Toyota Yaris (+4%) shine. Among other recent launches, the Hyundai Accent (#24), Chevrolet Cavalier (#38) and Suzuki Ignis (#54) shoot up.
