Now made in Algeria, the Renault Symbol is up 63% year-on-year in 2015.

After losing 20% over the Full Year 2014, Algerian new car registrations are hit further by government measures restricting imports of new cars in the country in order to foster a nascent automotive production industry. Sales were down 15% halfway through 2015 to just 160.000 units overall and down a catastrophic 45% over the second half of the year (110.000 units) as the pipeline of imports has progressively dried up in the absence of any end to the new government restrictions. Overall the 2015 market is down 25% to 255.000 for brands affiliated to the local dealership association (AC2A), down 31% to 270.000 for the overall market, the difference being Chinese manufacturers not reporting sales in Algeria (-62% to 15.000 units).
Chances are this is the last year the Dacia Logan enjoys the Algerian pole position.
One year kick-starting the local production of the Symbol at a new in Oued Tlélat, the Renault Group is hands down the overall winner in Algeria in 2015, gaining a whopping 10 percentage points of market share compared to 2014 at 33.4% vs. 23.5%. Renault is the #1 brand in Algeria once again with 49.494 sales (-5%) followed by Dacia shooting up from 10.2% share in 2014 to 15.1% this year thanks to deliveries up 2% to 40.688. Dacia even places three nameplates inside the 2015 Top 8 best-sellers vs. just one in 2014: the Logan (#1), Sandero (#7) and Duster (#8) with the Sandero up a stunning 31% and the Duster up 17%. Peugeot is down 13% to #3 while Hyundai and Toyota are both down 20% to #4 and #5 respectively, meaning the entire Top 5 brands lose less ground than the market, resulting in a strong consolidation: they represent 65.8% of Algerian sales in 2015 vs. just 50.6% in 2014.
The new Peugeot 308 is an instant hit in Algeria (+40%).
The hardest hit manufacturers are Volkswagen (-53%), Nissan (-56%), Seat (-63%) and Chevrolet (-72%). The title of best-selling nameplate in the country was a fight between two twins: the valiant Dacia Logan manages to post a third consecutive year in pole position by limiting its decline to -10% to 22.114 units, but the locally-produced Renault Symbol is catching up fast at +63% and 21.614 sales including a gargantuan 4.435 in December. The Symbol took the monthly lead for the first time in May, also topping the charts in September, November and December. In all logic, 2016 will be the year of the Symbol in Algeria. The Hyundai Accent rounds up the podium despite sales down 17%, followed by the Peugeot 208 (+1%) and Toyota Hilux (-6%) both up one rank on 2014. The Renault Clio IV is up six to #6 but the Peugeot 301 crumbles down 48% to #13 while the Peugeot 308 is up 40% to #14.
