New car sales in the Czech Republic are up a cool 14% year-on-year in December to 14,697 registrations, bringing the final 2013 total to 164,736 units, down 5% on 2012. If the Skoda Octavia is the most popular model in the country this month as usual at 10.6% share, the big event comes in 2nd place: after reaching the third position 5 times back in 2012, the Hyundai i30 unexpectedly rises to a fantastic 2nd spot thanks to 847 sales and 5.8% share, the nameplate’s highest ever ranking in the country and 2nd best-ever market share below the 6.1% it reached in October 2010. Even though the i30 is produced locally in Nošovice, it is still a technically a ‘foreign’ model and the first non-Skoda to manage to climb into 2nd place, since… well ever actually. At least as long as I have data for the Czech Republic which is 1998. Talk about an achievement!
The Dacia Logan is back inside the Czech Top 20 this month.
It’s fair to say Skodas encircle the Hyundai i30 atop the ranking this month, with the Fabia at #3 with 699 sales and 4.8%, the Rapid at #4 with 696 units and 4.7% and the Superb at #5 with 439 units and 3%. Add the Yeti up 7 spots on November to #7 and the Roomster up 3 to #9 and you have a reasonably successful month for Skoda. Other great performers this month in the Czech Republic include the Ford Focus up 7 ranks to #10, the Dacia Sandero up 11 to a best-ever #12 also reached in July, the Dacia Logan back up 11 to #18, Honda CR-V up 9 to #23 and the Mazda3 jumping up to #42 vs. #98 over the full year.
