It does look like we are headed towards a record year for new car sales in Argentina in 2013. May is up 17% year-on-year to 89,644 registrations which is the best-ever monthly figure for any month other than January and the fourth best-ever below January 2012 (112,607), January 2013 (107,091) and January 2011 (100,964). The year-to-date total is up 8% on 2012 and up 17% on 2011 to 422,225 units. If we compare the evolution of the market for the rest of the year for 2011 (362,180 after 5 months for a record 857,983 total) and 2012 (389,909 at 5 months, 840,679 total) and apply this to 2013, we come to a forecast for the Full Year 2013 between 910,000 and 1 million units… If Argentina crosses the 1 million annual sales milestone this year it could become the 5th American country to do so after the USA, Brazil, Canada and Mexico.
Onto the models ranking, and it’s another surprising bunch on top of the sales charts this month: the Peugeot 207 Compact is in pole position for the 2nd consecutive time and the 4th time ever after January 2011, January 2013 and April 2013 with 3,424 sales and 3.8% share, meaning it is now only 424 units below the Chevrolet Classic (#4 this month) in the 2013 year-to-date ranking…
However the best performer this month is the Ford Ecosport, up 2 spots on April to reach a record second place, even missing the top spot for only 17 units at 3,407 and 3.8%. Its previous best was #3, hit in September 2010, January, February and April 2011 and February 2013. It is now #3 year-to-date with 14,246 sales and 3.4% vs. #11 over the Full Year 2012. Other great performers this month in Argentina include the Renault Duster up 2 to #5 and now #4 year-to-date vs. #12 in 2012, the Renault Sandero up 13 to #13, Chevrolet Cobalt up 17 to #33, Onix up 48 to #39 and Prisma up 39 to #47. We also welcome the new generation Mercedes A-Class (#87) and the Peugeot 208 (#112) in the ranking.
